OPELOUSAS, LA – The 1-5 betting favorite in the $75,000 D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity for colts and geldings, Halfmoon Reef, lived up to his advance billing with a hard-fought win over X Clown, prevailing by a neck in a final time of 1:05.50 for the 5-1/2 furlongs over the fast track.

There was a three-way speed battle at the outset between Halfmoon Reef, My Amigo Charlie and Scotty Boy. The trio went at it through a quarter-mile of 22.19 seconds and a half of 45.53. As the field arrived at the top of the stretch, Halfmoon Reef put away his two early challengers, but faced a new foe in X Clown, who had rallied nicely on the far turn. X Clown was wearing down Halfmoon Reef, who had built a 2-1/2 length lead in the stretch, but Halfmoon Reef held on and got to the finish line first. Free Indeed closed strongly and beat out Scotty Boy for the third spot.

Halfmoon Reef paid $2.60 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. X Clown returned $3 to place and $2.10 to show. Free Indeed paid $2.40 to show.

Halfmoon Reef was bred in Louisiana by Clear Creek Stud, LLC and Coulee Croche Thoroughbreds, LLC. The 2-year-old colt is owned by Corrine and William Heiligbrodt, trained by Steve Asmussen and was ridden to victory by Diego Saenz. Halfmoon Reef is by Half Ours and is out of the Henny Hughes mare, Glorious Exit. He has now won two of three starts in his career and the $45,000 first-place purse increases his lifetime earnings to $84,568.
