LTBA Announces 2015 Louisiana Bred Champions

The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association has announced the results of the 2015 Accredited Louisiana Bred Champions, 2015 Stallions of the Year, 2015 Broodmare of the Year and Breeders of the Year.

Award presentations will be made at the 2016 Annual Meeting on Saturday June 11, 2016, at Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino, when the overall “Horse of the Year” will be revealed.

LTBA New Orleans Office Closed Friday, March 11

After monitoring the weather, getting news from the track, and on advice from the executive committee the LTBA office at the Fair Grounds will be closed Friday, March 11.

ICY GENTLEMAN TAKES THE PELICAN STAKES

VINTON, LA. – Icy Gentleman dominated six rivals to win Saturday night’s $100,000 Pelican Stakes at Delta Downs. The victory did not come without any drama however as the Henry B. Johnson, Jr. charge had to survive a lengthy jockey’s object before celebrating in the winner’s circle with jockey Jorge Guzman.

 

After breaking away from the starting gate in fourth position, Icy Gentleman stalked the early leaders until the field of seven reached the second turn of the 7-1/2 furlong test for 3-year-old Louisiana-breds. At that point Icy Gentleman began to take the lead when Chattanoogan was steadied by jockey Chris Rosier while in tight at the rail.

 

Following that incident, Icy Gentleman drew clear and won by a decisive nine lengths over Hunker Downs. So Sorry Ruston wound up third, beaten another 1-3/4 lengths. Chattanoogan faded to fourth before his jockey lodged the claim of foul. After several tense moments it was announced that the stewards had disallowed the claim and the original order would stand official.

 

Icy Gentleman, who is owned by Ironwater Farms Joint Venture (Jerry E. Chiles), covered the distance over a fast track in 1:33.63.

 

The win by Icy Gentleman was his second of the season and his fourth overall from eight career starts. He earned $60,000 for his effort on Saturday night which raised his lifetime bankroll to $212,835.

 

Icy Gentleman is a 3-year-old gelding by Yankee Gentleman out of the Five Star Day mare Icy Day. The chestnut runner was bred in Louisiana by his owner.

 

Sent to the gate as the even-money favorite, Icy Gentleman returned $4 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.20 to show. Hunker Downs was worth $4.80 to place and $2.20 to show. So Sorry Ruston paid $3.20 to show.

JET BLACK MAGIC TURNS THE TABLES ON SMITTYS COUGAR IN THE AZALEA STAKES

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted the $100,000 Azalea Stakes for 3-year-old Louisiana-bred fillies on Fridaynight and it was Jet Black Magic who came through with the win under jockey Colby Hernandez. Jet Black Magic’s victory provided revenge as she defeated Smittys Cougar by three lengths after her rival got the best of her by the same margin in their last start on February 6 in the $125,000 Louisiana Premier Night Starlet.

 

Saturday night’s tally came on a fast track as Jet Black Magic covered the 7-1/2 furlong distance of the Azalea in a time of 1:34.01.

 

The win by Jet Black Magic, who is trained by Bret Calhoun, marked her second stakes victory of the season. On Jackpot Day, November 21, she scored impressively in the $400,000 Delta Downs Princess Stakes (Gr. III) over a muddy track.

 

Overall, Jet Black Magic has won three of seven career starts for owner Carl R. Moore Management LLC (Carl R. Moore) and she has earned a total of $373,380. Saturday night’s effort was worth $60,000.

 

Jet Black Magic is a 3-year-old filly by Hold Me Back, out of the Silver Deputy mare Rhodelia. She was bred in Louisiana by Clear Creek Stud LLC and was purchased at sale as a yearling in her home state for $47,000.

 

Sent to the gate at odds of 2-1, Jet Black Magic paid $6 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.20 to show. Smittys Cougar was worth $2.20 to place and $2.10 to show. Thegoodwitch, who finished 2-1/4 length behind the runner-up in third, paid $2.60 to show.

LSU School of Veterinary Medicine to Host Equi-Day

LSU School of Veterinary Medicine to host Equi-Day
BATON ROUGE, LA.—On Saturday, March 12, the LSU SVM Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (SCAAEP) will host Equi-Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU SVM). Equi-day is an event dedicated to providing educational opportunities to horse owners about equine medicine, as well as supporting SCAAEP. This event will be filled with numerous informative speakers, as well as demonstrations and lunch is provided.
 
The registration fee is $25, but goes up to $30 on the day of the event. This money will be used to support the SCAAEP, which includes wet labs for students to get hands-on experience with ultrasound, dentistry, bandaging, stallion management and more before they begin their hospital rotations. The lectures will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the LSU SVM Auditorium and include lectures on horse nutrition, equine first aid and vaccinations, among other topics. The demonstrations will follow lunch and will be in various locations throughout the LSU Veterinary Hospital. Demonstrations include bandaging techniques, physical exams, acupuncture and dentistry.

OAKLAWN ANNOUNCES SECOND PURSE INCREASE OF THE SEASON

Hot Springs, Ark. (Friday, March 4, 2016) – The second half of Oaklawn’s record-setting season will feature a sizeable second purse increase.

Beginning Thursday, March 10, purses will be increasing by as much as $5,000 thanks to continued good weather and strong fan support both in racing and gaming.

With this second increase, maiden special weight races, which had been $68,000 at the start of the season, will now be worth $75,000 – the highest in the country this time of year. Open allowance races will be as high as $80,000. The minimum purse is $22,500.

Oaklawn’s first purse increase of the year took effect Saturday, Feb, 20, when maiden special weight races were raised to $70,000 and open allowance races went to a minimum of $73,000. Also at the time, Oaklawn raised the purses of three stakes by $50,000 – the Honeybee Stakes (G3) March 12, and the Razorback Handicap (G3) and Azeri Stakes (G2). The Razorback and Azeri (now worth $350,000 each) share the card with the $900,000 Rebel Stakes (G2) March 19.

The nice weather this race meet has been a much welcome change over 2015 when the track lost seven days to winter weather and has led to across the board increases. Through Feb. 27, on-track handle was up 22% to $17,170,825 and total handle was up 9% to $82,553,112. The sun and unseasonably warm temperatures has led to a 31% in attendance with 237,650 people coming out to the races through the half-way point in the season.

“It’s exciting heading into the second half of our racing season with such strong momentum knowing that our biggest days of the meet are still ahead,” said Director of Racing David Longinotti. “The Rebel Day card March 19 will offer $1.6 million in stakes purses and there will be $2 million in stakes purses Arkansas Derby Day April 16.”

The 2016 Oaklawn meet runs through Saturday, April 16.

Equine Sales Company Announces Date for Unified Yearling Sale with LTBA

Equine Sales Company today announced that it will hold its Consignor Select Yearling Sale on September 7, 2016, in Opelousas, Louisiana. This will be the first unified yearling sale held by Equine Sales together with the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association (LTBA). A mutual agreement between Equine Sales and the LTBA was announced earlier this week. The LTBA and Equine Sales will now work jointly to promote and support the September sale.
“We are thrilled to have the endorsement of the LTBA and truly believe that by working together we can grow the market for Louisiana-bred horses, both nationally and within the state,” said Foster Bridewell, sales director for Equine Sales. “We expect to have robust interest from both consignors and buyers for this joint yearling sale, especially with the support and promotion of the LTBA.”
Equine Sales also announced that it is still accepting consignments for its 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale to be held May 10.
“We already have a strong catalogue on tap for that sale,” noted Bridewell, “and we are getting a lot of calls about the new Equine Sales Oaks and Equine Sales Derby that will debut this year.”
The new races for sale graduates, to be run May 6 and 7 at Evangeline Downs, will each feature a $75,000 purse for 3-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles. Horses going through the ring at this year’s 2-year-old and yearling sales will be eligible for future runnings.

Unified Horse Sale Agreement Announced

(New Orleans, La.) – The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association (LTBA) and Equine Sales of Louisiana today proudly announce a mutual agreement with the purpose of encouraging and supporting the sale, purchase, and racing opportunities for Louisiana Thoroughbred horse owners, breeders, trainers and potential buyers in the State of Louisiana. The LTBA has agreed to suspend the operation of the Breeders Sales Company of Louisiana’s Annual Yearling Sale for a period of five years. During this period the LTBA will assist in the advertising and information gathering and provide a full endorsement of the Equine Sales of Louisiana. “The Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association and its members are the number one priority here. Moving forward as a unified group will only solidify the future of the industry in Louisiana,” said Tom Early, President of the LTBA. Gary Johnson, President of Equine Sales of Louisiana, was equally pleased. “Horsemen working together for a common goal is always what’s best for business in Louisiana. The agreement to work together to provide a Yearling sale that everyone can be proud of is what’s best for the horsemen.”
