Louisiana Breds Exceed OBS Select Yearling Average

Louisiana-breds continue to show their strong marketability on the national level as four Louisiana-breds sold through the OBS Select Yearlings Session on Tuesday, October 10. Three of the four sold above the average of $45,247 for the session, with one bringing $75,000 and two selling for $50,000 each. Together the average of the four, $49,750 was above the session average.

 

Hip# 186, a colt by New Year’s Day-Moon Larry colt was purchased for $75,000 by Redwings Enterprises for $75,000. Select Sales, agent was the consignor. G1 Breeders Cup Juvenile winner New Year’s Day is ranked among the leading first crop sires in North America. The dam is a stakes placed half sister to stakes winner Why Wear Shoes.

 

Hip# 85 a colt by Strong Mandate-Carson Copy was purchased by Big D Stable purchased from the Pelican State Thoroughbreds, agent consignment for $50,000. The colt is from the first crop of G1 stakes winning, Breeders Cup Juvenile placed Strong Mandate. The dam, who has produced three winners from as many runners, is an unraced daughter of Carson Copy and a half sister to stakes winner, Shezacrazygirl.

 

Hip# 129, a Star Guitar-Geiger Geisha colt sold for $50,000 with EQB, Inc., Patrice Miller, Agent signing the ticket. The colt, by Louisiana’s all time top money earner and current leading second crop sire, is a half brother to stakes winner My Friend Flavin and a ¾ brother to 2017 juvenile stakes winner Aceguitar.

 

Additionally Hip# 168. Sallee Sumthing, a filly by Sum of the Parts-LaSalle Glory was purchased for $24,000 by Jason Hall, agent. Select Sales, agent was the consignor.

 

Bull Market for Yearlings in 2017

Now that Keeneland’s marathon September yearling sale is complete, a clear trend has emerged showing greater demand in a smaller marketplace when compared with the same period a year ago.

With 2,555 horses sold during the 12-day Keeneland auction for a total of $307,845,400, the average price of $120,487 and $57,000 median were both records for the world’s largest yearling sale. The gross, average, and median prices represented gains of 12.8%, 23.2%, and 42.5%, respectively, over 2016 levels.

Yearling-only auctions and mixed sales through Sept. 25, 2017, have offered 6,747 yearlings, of which 4,890 sold for gross receipts of $425.9 million, according to data compiled by BloodHorse MarketWatch. The gross represents a 10.2% gain over the $386.5 million paid for 5,586 from 7,906 offered through the first nine months of 2016 at comparable auctions.

The number offered at the 23 sales where yearlings changed hands so far this year has declined by 14.6% and the total sold is down 12.4%.

Fasig-Tipton’s boutique Saratoga selected yearling sale produced the second-highest gross and highest average and median prices, with all three increasing by double-digit percentages this year. Fasig-Tipton reported 156 yearlings sold from 194 through the ring, with gross receipts of $52.995 million, 16.3% over the $45.570 million total paid for 156 of the 203 offered a year ago. The Saratoga sale average also increased 16.3% to $339,712 from $292,115 in 2016, and the median price of $300,000 was 26.3% higher than the previous year’s median of $237,500.

The accompanying table shows the top five equine auctions this year ranked by gross receipts and comparisons with 2016.

Besides the overall gains in cumulative gross, average, and median prices for all yearlings sold to date, there has been a significant improvement in the number sold at the top and upper-middle parts of the market.

Sixteen yearlings were sold for seven figures this year, compared with 11 through the first nine months of 2016. A total of 151 yearlings attracted final bids of $500,000 or more compared with 116 yearlings sold at that level at the same point a year ago. Within the upper-middle market price range of $175,000-$249,999, there were 252 yearlings sold this year, compared with 243 in 2016.

Meanwhile at the other end of the spectrum, 2,927 yearlings sold below $50,000 in 2017, compared with 3,698 in 2016.

Three major sales companies have yearling sales scheduled for next month, beginning with the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale Oct. 2-3. That will be followed by Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s Oct. 10-12 selected and open yearling sale, Fasig-Tipton Saratoga fall sale Oct. 16,  the Barretts fall yearling and horses of all ages sale Oct. 17, and the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October sale from Oct. 23-26.

Nearly 200 Head Consigned to Equine Sales’ Open Yearling and Mixed Sale

(Opelousas, Louisiana — September 19, 2017) — A catalogue of 195 head has been released for the Equine Sales Company Open Yearling and Mixed Sale. Approximately 10 late supplements are being added, which will bring the total catalogue to more than 200. The auction will be held Sunday, October 15, at 10 a.m. in Opelousas, Louisiana.
The auction will start with an offering of 73 yearlings followed by a mixed session with 122 head. The mixed session includes 31 weanlings and six 2-year-olds along with broodmares, a stallion and horses of racing age. 
Among the sires represented in the yearling session are Justin Phillip, Lookin at Lucky, Custom for Carlos, Songandaprayer, Half Ours, Guilt Trip and Star Guitar. Many of those same stallions are also represented among the in-foal offerings.
“We had a very good select yearling sale in August, so I think that momentum will continue with this one,” said Sales Director Foster Bridewell. “This catalogue has something for everyone in all price ranges, and we expect to have some new buyers who couldn’t make it to our last sale due to Hurricane Harvey.”

Equine Sales Company Records Across-the-Board Gains in Consignor Select Yearling Sale

Equine Sales Company on Thursday posted gains in every meaningful category in its Consignor Select Yearling Sale in Opelousas, Louisiana. All told, 138 of 193 head sold for a total of $1,636,400 with an average of $11,858 and median of $7,000. That represents a gain of 8.8 percent in sales compared to last year’s total of $1,503,900 with an identical number of horses sold. This year’s average of $11,858 was an increase of 8.8 percent from last year, and the median of $7,000 is 27.3 percent better than last year’s $5,500. The buyback rate this year was 28.5 percent compared to 33.7 percent last year.

“We expected to have a strong sale as our consignors really showcased a excellent selection of yearlings,” said Foster Bridewell, sales director. “But I was even a little surprised how good the numbers were considering the region is still dealing with the aftereffects of Hurricane Harvey.”

The sale-topper was Hip 116, a Louisiana-bred colt by 2003 Horse of the Year Mineshaft out of the stakes-placed Cat Thief mare Noble Bandit. The April 19 foal was consigned by 4M Ranch, agent, and purchased by Louis Roussell III.

Five other horses sold for $50,000 or more with the leading filly being Hip 93, a Louisiana-bred daughter of Violence who sold for $50,000 to O’Brien Bloodstock from Pike Racing, agent.

Nearly 140 Head Consigned to Texas Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale

(Austin, Texas — July 25, 2017) The Texas Thoroughbred Association has announced a catalog of 139 head for its Texas Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale on August 21 at Lone Star Park. There are 102 yearlings in the catalog with a mixed session of 37 head. The catalog is nearly identical in size to last year’s, which offered 105 yearlings and 37 head in the mixed session. This will mark the second yearling sale operated by the Texas Thoroughbred Association after it took over operation of the Texas auctions from Fasig-Tipton.

 

Leading Texas sire Too Much Bling is well represented in the sale with 10 yearlings, and there are eight yearlings and three weanlings from the first crops of Texas stallion Moro Tap, a son of Tapit and half brother to Grade 1 winner Ascend. Top regional sires including Custom for Carlos, Grasshopper, Half Ours, My Golden Song and Songandaprayer are represented, as are national prominent stallions Strong Mandate, Graydar, Majesticperfection, Take Charge Indy, Sky Mesa, Stay Thirsty, Liaison and Overanalyze.

 

All yearling graduates of this sale will be eligible for the 2018 Texas Thoroughbred Sales Futurity to be run in two divisions at Lone Star Park. The 2017 editions of the race were run on Saturday, and both were won by horses who had been through the Texas Summer Yearling Sale and the Texas 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale.

 

“We are coming off a big weekend for Texas racing as Keene Thoroughbreds’ Texas Chrome, who sold here as a yearling for $10,000, became just the second Texas-bred millionaire in history, and we had two of the best runnings of the Texas Thoroughbred Sales Futurity in many years,” said Mary Ruyle, executive director of the Texas Thoroughbred Association.

 

The $105,600 colts and geldings division went to Galactica, a Texas-bred son of Uncle Abbie who originally sold for just $1,000 as a yearling from Serenity Farm to Thomas Julian and then came back to sell for $52,000 as a 2-year-old from the consignment of Twin Oaks Training Center to Brad Grady and Carl R. Moore Management LLC. Bret Calhoun trains the earner of $79,820 in three starts.

 

Janae, a Louisiana-bred daughter of Closing Argument, took the $97,525 fillies division for owner Susan Moulton and trainer Brandon Jenkins. Janae sold from Benchmark Training Center to Moulton’s Safari Bloodstock for $16,000 as a yearling, and then when consigned by Inside Move as a 2-year-old did not meet her reserve at $35,000. She has now earned $77,123 in four starts.

 

“The goal for this sale has been to increase the quality every year, and I think we’ve accomplished that,” said Tim Boyce, sales director. “Direct Dial, who topped last year’s yearling sale, already broke his maiden impressively at Keeneland and then finished second in the Tremont Stakes at Belmont, and we’ve got several horses of similar quality this year.”

 

The online sale catalog features photos and videos along with other enhancements, such as the ability for consignors to easily share information about their horses on social media. The sale is still accepting supplements and those will be added to the website.

 

The TTA will hold a New Owners Seminar with a panel of industry experts on Sunday, August 20, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. A Pre-Sale Party is set for that night at 6 p.m. Both events are free to attend and will be held in the Texas Thoroughbred Sales Pavilion.

More than 200 Head Entered in Equine Sales Consignor Select Yearling Sale

(Opelousas, Louisiana — July 18, 2017) Equine Sales Company has announced a catalog of 214 head for its Consignor Select Yearling Sale set for August 31 at 10 a.m. in Opelousas, Louisiana.
“We have just about the same number of yearlings as we did last year, but I think buyers will notice an increase in the sire power of this catalog,” said Sales Director Foster Bridewell. “This will be the second year that we have joined forces with the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association to promote a single select yearling sale, and the result of that has been a continued increase in quality.”
Among the first-crop sires represented in the sale are Alpha, Apriority, Cross Traffic, Goldencents, Guilt Trip, Itsmyluckyday, Mucho Macho Man, Revolutionary, Shakin It Up and Sum of the Parts. The list of second-crop stallions with progeny in the sale includes Awesome Patriot, Bind, Flashpoint, Fort Larned, Liaison, New Year’s Day, Oxbow, Paynter, Treasure Beach (GB) and Violence.
The top three Louisiana stallions by 2017 progeny earnings—Half Ours, Songandaprayer and Custom for Carlos—all have numerous yearlings on offer.
Graduates of this sale will be eligible to be nominated to the 2019 editions of the Equine Sales Derby and Equine Sales Oaks at Evangeline Downs.
