VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs wrapped up its first week of live racing on Saturday night with the $100,000 Gold Cup Stakes for Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds and up competing at one mile. Tigertail Ranch’s Trevilion notched the initial stakes win of his career in the event and in the process gave trainer Victor Arceneaux a sweep of the weekend stakes activity. Arceneaux also saddled Mariah’s Galaxy before her score in the $100,000 Magnolia Stakes on Friday night.

Breaking from the outside post position in a field of 10, Trevilion stalked the early pace in the Gold Cup under jockey Diego Saenz sitting two lengths off the lead of Just Stormin. The latter carved out fractional times of 23.46 seconds for the opening quarter mile, and 48.15 for the half. As the field entered the far turn, Just Stormin was gave way to Trevilion who made a three-wide move and powered on to a four-length win over Mageez, who closed late for second. Jimi’s a Star also rallied to grab third, another head behind the runner-up.

The final time of the Gold Gup for Trevilion was 1:39.85 over a fast track.

Trevilion has now won four of seven career starts. His lifetime bankroll now stands at $143,250 after depositing another $60,000 on Saturday night.

Bred in Louisiana by his owner, Trevilion is a 3-year-old gelding by Lone Star Special, out of the Marquetry mare Spotsylvania.

Sent to the gate at odds of 7-2 on the totebard, Trevilion paid $9.60 to win, $4.60 to place and $3.60 to show. Mageez was worth $4.40 to place and $3.20 to show. Jimi’s a Star returned $5.80 to show.

 

Delta Downs will begin its second week of the new season on Wednesday night with another 10-race program that begins at 4:55 pm CST. Next week’s featured races include the $100,000 Louisiana Jewel on Friday night and the $100,000 Louisiana Legacy on Saturday.

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs capped of its new Thoroughbred season on Saturday with a 10-race program that included a pair of stakes races, the $100,000 Gold Cup and the $50,000 Jean Lafitte. Gillian and Kirk L. Harris’s Sir Genghis took the Gold Cup while Ninth Street dominated the Jean Laffite.

 

The Gold Cup field had plenty speed this year and Sir Genghis was one of the early-pace runners. After taking advantage of the rail post position under journeyman rider Thomas Pompell, the Kirk L. Harris trainee followed Queeten through an opening quarter-mile in 23.56 seconds while laying just off the pace. Sir Genghis then took the lead and passed the half-mile in 47.95 and three-quarters in 1:12.87. After that he proved unbeatable through the homestretch, hitting the finish line a half-length in front of Mageez who rallied well but came up short in second. Race favorite Underpressure settled for third, another 1-1/2 lengths behind the runner-up.

 

The final time for Sir Genghis in the Gold Cup was 1:39.43 over a fast track.

 

The victory by Sir Genghis was his first at Delta Downs from six trips and it was his 11th career win overall from 48 total trips to the starting gate. He earned $60,000 for the Gold Cup score and now boasts a lifetime bankroll of $520,612.

 

Bred in Louisiana by Randel Stutes, Sir Genghis is a 7-year-old gelding by Tale of the Cat, out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Staria.

 

Sent off at odds of 5-2, Sir Genghis paid $7 to win, $4 to place and $2.60 to show. Mageez paid $5.20 to place and $3.20 to show. Underpressure returned $2.40 to show.

 

Delta Downs will embark on its second week of live racing on Wednesday night with a 10-race program that beings at 5:25 pm CT.

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted the $100,000 Gold Cup Stakes on Saturday night as the track closed out the first week of its new Thoroughbred season. The one-mile Gold Cup for Louisiana-breds was won by Circle H Farms’ Nubin Ridge under jockey Ashley Broussard.

After breaking from post five in a field of 10, Nubin Ridge settled into stride while stalking the early leaders through fractional times of 23.88 seconds for the quarter-mile, 48.47 for the half, and 1:13.01 for three-quarters. As the field turned for home Broussard gave her mount the cue and he responded by running down pacesetter Sir Genghis and winning by a half-length. Race favorite Underpressure finished another ¾ of a length behind in third.

Nubin Ridge, who is trained by Alan Klanfer, covered the eight furlongs in 1:39.65 over a fast track.

The win by Nubin Ridge was the 10th of his 60-race career. He earned $60,000 for the score and now boasts a lifetime bankroll of $573,015.

Bred in Louisiana by Neal McFadden and Mary McFadden, Nubin Ridge is a 7-year-old gelding by Gold Tribute, out of the The Prime Minister mare So Sorry. He was purchased as a yearling in 2011 for $2,500.

Sent to the gate as the third choice of the wagering public, Nubin Ridge returned $14.20 to win, $8.60 to place and $5.40 to show. Sir Genghis paid $5.80 to place and $3.60 to show. Underpressure was worth $2.60 to show.
