TOUCHUPONASTAR SHINES BRIGHT IN THE $100,000 GOLD CUP AT DELTA DOWNS

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs opened the 2023-24 Thoroughbred race season on Friday night with a nine-race program that featured a pair of $100,000 stakes races. Fans were treated to the Gold Cup and the Magnolia Stakes. Both events were for Louisiana-bred runners going seven furlongs. The Magnolia featured fillies and mares.

The Gold Cup featured heavily favored Touchuponastar, who was gunning for third win in as many starts at Delta Downs. His last appearance in Vinton resulted in a rousing victory in the $150,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship back in February.

Touchuponastar did not disappoint by coming through with a 5 ½-length victory and it could have been even more. After breaking sharply under jockey Tim Thornton, the eventual winner cruised to an easy lead and carved out fractional times of 23.75 seconds for the opening quarter mile and 47.61 for the half-mile. As the field of eight made the turn for home Thornton shook the reins and his mount responded, going on to a dominant win over Big Chopper while Autumns Strong Man finished another 3-3/4 lengths behind the runner-up.

The final time for Touchuponastar, who is trained by Jeff Delhomme, was 1:24.64. Each race on the program was contest over a fast track and with near perfect weather conditions.

Touchuponastar has now won eight of 11 career starts and has banked a total of $468,100 for his owner, Set-Hut LLC (Jake Delhomme). His win in the Gold Cup was worth $60,000.

Bred in Louisiana by Coteau Grove Farms, Touchuponastar is a 4-year-old bay gelding by Star Guitar, out of the Quiet American mare Touch Magic.

Leaving the starting gate at odds of 1-5, Touchuponastar paid $2.60 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Big Chopper returned $3.40 to place and $2.60 to show. Longshot Autumns Strong Man was worth $11 to show.

All eyes were on Free Like a Girl in the $100,000 Magnolia Stakes as the 4-year-old filly was attempting to the race for the second year in a row and become a millionaire at the same time. But it wasn’t to be as Noneya pulled the upset under jockey Vicente Del Cid, who was riding for owner/trainer Ronnie Ward. Free Like a Girl made a late bid but came up short finishing third behind the winner and Norah G who wound up second.

As the seven-furlong race for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares began it was Norah G who showed early speed by setting fractional times of 23.71 seconds for the quarter mile and 48.21 for the half. Meanwhile, Noneya sat patiently off the leader while stalking the pace before digging in for a sustained rally turning for home.

At the wire Noneya was 2-1/4 lengths clear of Norah G while Free Like a girl was another ¾ of a length behind in third. The winner covered the distance in 1:25.97.

Noneya has now won six-of-18 career starts. Her $60,000 winner’s share in the Magnolia raised her lifetime bankroll to $202,340.

Bred in Louisiana by J. Adcock & Hume Warnall, Noneya is a 5-year-old mare by Palace, out of the Quiet American mare American Placed.

Dispatched at odds of 6-1, Noneya paid $15 to win, $5.40 to place and $2.60 to show. Norah G was worth $4.80 to place and $2.80 to show. Free Like a Girl, who went off heavily favored at even money, returned $2.10 to show.

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs closed out its first week of live Thoroughbred racing for the 2022-23 season on Saturday and the nine-race program featured the $100,000 Gold Cup Stakes for 3-year-old and up Louisiana-bred competing at seven furlongs. The event was won by Allied Racing Stables, LLC’s Who Took the Money under jockey Deshawn Parker.

Using a come-from-behind style in a race with plenty of pace, Who Took the Money rallied strongly around the second turn to garner the lead in the upper-stretch and go on to a 7-1/4 length win at the finish line. The early pace of 22.80 second for the quarter mile and 46.94 for the half was set by Brians Iron Mike. But as the field turned for home it was Who Took the Money who found the lead and went on to the score. Brians Iron Mike stayed on for second while Relentless Dancer settled for third another fourt lengths behind the runner-up.

The final time for Who Took the Money in the Gold Cup was 1:24.51 seconds, just 20/100ths off the track record set by No Its not in 2003. Each race on the Saturday card was contested over a fast track.

Who Took the Money was making his local debut in the Gold Cup and was also coming off a five-month layoff. His last start before the race came in the Evangeline Downs Classic back in May, which he also won. The Gold Cup tally was his eighth from 12 overall starts and his fourth in stakes company. He earned $60,000 for his effort on Saturday and now boasts a lifetime bankroll of $347,677.

Bred in Louisiana by his owner, Who Took the Money is a 4-year-old chestnut gelding by Steet Boss, out of the Speightstown mare Speights’ Colony.

Sent to the gate at odds of 8-5, Who Took the Money paid $5.40 to win, $4.20 to place and $2.80 to show. Brian’s Iron Mike was worth $8.40 to place and $6.20 to show. Relentless Dancer returned $5.60 to show.

LANGS DAY RALLIES FOR UPSET WIN IN THE $100,000 GOLD CUP AT DELTA DOWNS

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted the $100,000 Gold Cup Stakes on Saturday afternoon and the winner was Keith Plaisance’s Langs Day with jockey Ty Kennedy in the saddle.

 

The heavy 1-2 wagering favorite in the Gold Cup was No Parole, who had a Grade I win on his resume and was undefeated at Delta Downs entering Saturday’s showdown. But the speedster was confronted early on by Scarlettsblackjack and the pair dueled each other into submission as they set fractional times of 22.79 seconds for the opening quarter mile and 47.32 for the half before both were overtaken by closers entering the second turn of the seven-furlong affair.

 

Turning for home it was Speaktomeoflove who gained a short lead, but it didn’t last long as Langs Day and Underpressure swung into the stretch with momentum and blew by the leader. At the finish line Langs Day was 3-1/4 lengths in front of Underpressure who finished second while Grand Luwegee picked up the pieces to be third, another 1-1/2 lengths behind the top pair. Langs Day covered the distance over a fast track in a final time of 1:26.94.

 

The win by Langs Day was the fifth of his 15-race career. He earned $60,000 for the effort and now boasts a lifetime bankroll of $177,840.

 

Bred in Louisiana by J. Adcock & Adcock’s Red River Farm LLC, Langs Day is a 4-year-old chestnut gelding by New Year’s Day, out of the Langfuhr mare Langsyne.

 

Distpatched at odd of 14-1, Langs Day paid $32.80 to win, $32.80 to win, $14.20 to place and $7.80 to show. Underpressure was worth $8.40 to place and $6 to show. Grand Luwegee returned $6.60 to show.

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs wrapped up its first week of live racing on Saturday night with the $100,000 Gold Cup Stakes for Louisiana-bred 3-year-olds and up competing at one mile. Tigertail Ranch’s Trevilion notched the initial stakes win of his career in the event and in the process gave trainer Victor Arceneaux a sweep of the weekend stakes activity. Arceneaux also saddled Mariah’s Galaxy before her score in the $100,000 Magnolia Stakes on Friday night.

Breaking from the outside post position in a field of 10, Trevilion stalked the early pace in the Gold Cup under jockey Diego Saenz sitting two lengths off the lead of Just Stormin. The latter carved out fractional times of 23.46 seconds for the opening quarter mile, and 48.15 for the half. As the field entered the far turn, Just Stormin was gave way to Trevilion who made a three-wide move and powered on to a four-length win over Mageez, who closed late for second. Jimi’s a Star also rallied to grab third, another head behind the runner-up.

The final time of the Gold Gup for Trevilion was 1:39.85 over a fast track.

Trevilion has now won four of seven career starts. His lifetime bankroll now stands at $143,250 after depositing another $60,000 on Saturday night.

Bred in Louisiana by his owner, Trevilion is a 3-year-old gelding by Lone Star Special, out of the Marquetry mare Spotsylvania.

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs capped of its new Thoroughbred season on Saturday with a 10-race program that included a pair of stakes races, the $100,000 Gold Cup and the $50,000 Jean Lafitte. Gillian and Kirk L. Harris’s Sir Genghis took the Gold Cup while Ninth Street dominated the Jean Laffite.

 

The Gold Cup field had plenty speed this year and Sir Genghis was one of the early-pace runners. After taking advantage of the rail post position under journeyman rider Thomas Pompell, the Kirk L. Harris trainee followed Queeten through an opening quarter-mile in 23.56 seconds while laying just off the pace. Sir Genghis then took the lead and passed the half-mile in 47.95 and three-quarters in 1:12.87. After that he proved unbeatable through the homestretch, hitting the finish line a half-length in front of Mageez who rallied well but came up short in second. Race favorite Underpressure settled for third, another 1-1/2 lengths behind the runner-up.

 

The final time for Sir Genghis in the Gold Cup was 1:39.43 over a fast track.

 

The victory by Sir Genghis was his first at Delta Downs from six trips and it was his 11th career win overall from 48 total trips to the starting gate. He earned $60,000 for the Gold Cup score and now boasts a lifetime bankroll of $520,612.

 

Bred in Louisiana by Randel Stutes, Sir Genghis is a 7-year-old gelding by Tale of the Cat, out of the Unbridled’s Song mare Staria.

 

Sent off at odds of 5-2, Sir Genghis paid $7 to win, $4 to place and $2.60 to show. Mageez paid $5.20 to place and $3.20 to show. Underpressure returned $2.40 to show.

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted the $100,000 Gold Cup Stakes on Saturday night as the track closed out the first week of its new Thoroughbred season. The one-mile Gold Cup for Louisiana-breds was won by Circle H Farms’ Nubin Ridge under jockey Ashley Broussard.

After breaking from post five in a field of 10, Nubin Ridge settled into stride while stalking the early leaders through fractional times of 23.88 seconds for the quarter-mile, 48.47 for the half, and 1:13.01 for three-quarters. As the field turned for home Broussard gave her mount the cue and he responded by running down pacesetter Sir Genghis and winning by a half-length. Race favorite Underpressure finished another ¾ of a length behind in third.

Nubin Ridge, who is trained by Alan Klanfer, covered the eight furlongs in 1:39.65 over a fast track.

The win by Nubin Ridge was the 10th of his 60-race career. He earned $60,000 for the score and now boasts a lifetime bankroll of $573,015.

Bred in Louisiana by Neal McFadden and Mary McFadden, Nubin Ridge is a 7-year-old gelding by Gold Tribute, out of the The Prime Minister mare So Sorry. He was purchased as a yearling in 2011 for $2,500.

Sent to the gate as the third choice of the wagering public, Nubin Ridge returned $14.20 to win, $8.60 to place and $5.40 to show. Sir Genghis paid $5.80 to place and $3.60 to show. Underpressure was worth $2.60 to show.
