Blue Star Racing in Louisiana announced May 7 it will add Breaking Lucky, a graded stakes-winning half brother to the dam of Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner Country House, to its stallion roster for 2020. The farm near Scott, La., bought the millionaire son of Lookin At Luckyprior to the Arkansas Derby (G1) from a racing partnership that included West Point Thoroughbreds, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Eric Young, and R. A. Hill Stable. Breaking Lucky has been retired.
“We are so excited because we are adding another graded stakes-winning millionaire to our roster,” said Blue Star Racing owner Dex Comardelle, who started standing multiple grade 1 winner Real Solution in 2018. He leases the son of Kitten’s Joy from Calumet Farm. “This is an opportunity for the breeders in our area to tap into a sire line that is red hot in Lookin At Lucky. You also are tapping into a very deep female family as well.”
Sister Peacock and jockey Jesse Campbell led gate-to-wire in the $100,000 Star Shoot Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Woodbine April 21, boosting her record to three wins from five starts. Her only two losses were both runner-up finishes. Owned by Brent and Russell McLellan and trainer Stuart Simon, the Kentucky-bred daughter of Real Solution was a 1 1/4-length winner in the six-furlong feature, giving her sire his first stakes winner.
Sister Peacock set fractions of :22.97 and :45.99 then kept her closest pursuer, Missmizz, at bay en route to victory in 1:09.53. Power Galfinished third off a ground-saving trip and Intanga Rose was fourth, edging out Si Si Tequila, who challenged three-wide turning for home before drifting out in the stretch.
Blue Star Racing’s freshman sire and grade 1 winner Real Solution picked up his first winner July 7 when his son Lagartijo won a 5 1/2-furlong maiden claiming race in his third start at Hipodromo de las Americas in Mexico City.
The colt out of the winning Danehill daughter Keeping Watch had been making steady progress since he debuted June 1, when he finished third, four lengths behind the winner. In his next start, Lagartijo was second by only a half-length. Then, in breaking his maiden, he won in near gate-to-wire fashion by 3 1/4 lengths in a final time of 1:07.20 for owner Cuadra San Jorge.
Lagartijo is the fourth winner produced by Keeping Watch from four foals to race. The mare’s most recent trip through an auction was at the 2017 Keeneland January Winter Mixed Sale where Sycamore Shade Racing bought her for $10,000 in foal to Kitten’s Joy.
Ken and Sarah Ramsey bred Lagartijo in Kentucky. The Ramseys also bred and raced Real Solution, who won the Arlington Million Stakes (G1T) and Knob Creek Manhattan Stakes (G1T). Real Solution placed in the Man o’ War Stakes (G1T), Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational Stakes (G1T), and Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap (G1T).
The son of Kitten’s Joy entered stud at Ramsey Farm with $1,374,175 in earnings. After one breeding season, the stallion was transferred to Calumet Farm, where he stood two seasons before being shipped to Blue Star Racing in Louisiana. The stallion stands at Blue Star Racing for $5,000.

“We’re thrilled with the opportunity to stand Real Solution here in Louisiana. We believe he can be the type of stallion to set the foundation of what we want to build here at Blue Star and offer Louisiana breeders a tremendous opportunity being one of Kittens Joy’s most accomplished sons at stud. We’re honored to work with Calumet Farm as they have been one of the most iconic organizations in horse racing over the years.” Said Comardelle.
Located just outside Lafayette Louisiana, Blue Star Racing designed a brand new 10,000 Square foot barn with 24 stalls including numerous foaling stalls. Blue Star is located in the heart of the Louisiana thoroughbred community, and is home to one of the premier upcoming facilities in the area.
“With Big Blue Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) joining the Calumet roster in 2017 we found that a lease to Blue Star would be the best option for Real Solution to attract the book of mares he deserves. The opportunity to participate in the Louisiana bred program will give Real Solution a distinct advantage in the 2018 breeding season.” Said Calumet Farm’s Director of Stallions, Jak Knelman.
