Terry Gabriel’s Pelican State Thoroughbreds has returned to the two-day Ocala Breeders’ Sales Winter Mixed Sale with a strong group of short yearlings and the hope that the consignment will be able to generate the same kind of success they enjoyed in 2020.
Gabriel, who sold last year’s $165,000 sale topper, a son of Union Rags—La Milanesa, by Mr. Greeley, has barely had time to think ahead of the Jan. 26 start and hopes that foot traffic will be congruent to bidding action come Tuesday morning.
With the Two-Year-Old sales somewhat delayed due to the pandemic in full swing, it is obvious that there is still the demand for good horses. Today at the Ocala Breeders Sales Company sale, Dennis O’Neill paid $185,000 for a colt by Half Ours who had recorded the fastest quarter of a mile of any horse at the sale when he got the distance in 20:1. O’Neill typically buys horses that are trained by his brother, Doug O’Neill, who has trained two Kentucky Derby winners in I’ll Have Another and Nyquist. Consigned by Blue River Bloodstock, Inc., Agent IV, the colt was bred in Louisiana out of the winning Into Mischief dam, All About Ju Ju, by the Summer Hill Equine of William Andrade.
Clear Creek Stud and others will be offering yearlings by Half Ours at the upcoming Equine Sales Company Consignor Select Yearling Sale scheduled for August 20th in Opelousas, Louisiana, and the Texas Thoroughbred Summer Yearling Sale scheduled for August 24th at Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, Texas.
The under-tack show for next week’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s July 2-Year-Olds and Horses of Racing Age Sale reached its midway point Wednesday in Central Florida and a Louisiana bred colt by Half Ours (hip 383) turned in the week’s fastest quarter-mile so far, covering the distance in :20 1/5. The bay colt is consigned by Sergio Centeno’s Blue River Bloodstock and is out of All About Ju Ju (Into Mischief).
“He prepped in :21 1/5, so I expected he could go :21 flat to :20 4/5, but he worked really, really good,” said Centeno.
Centeno’s brother Jaime purchased the colt for $8,000 at last year’s OBS October Sale.
