A yearling colt sired by Florida-based Khozan was purchased by Norman Stables for $22,000 to top the Oct. 27 Equine Sales of Louisiana’s Open Yearling and Mixed Sale in Opelousas, La.
Consigned by Oakridge Farm, the colt was bred in Louisiana by Paul Pruett and is out of the Dixie Union mare Unwooed. The colt’s second dam, the Alysheba mare Designatoree, produced Voice of Destiny, a $556,723-earner whose 24 victories from ages 2 to 10 included the Berkeley Handicap and California Juvenile Stakes, both grade 3. Designatoree, a half sister to grade 1 winner Very Subtle, is also granddam of grade 3 winner Actin Good.
A robust list of supplements to Equine Sales Company’s Open Yearling and Mixed Sale has boosted the catalog to nearly 150 horses for the auction set for Sunday, October 27. The sale will begin at 11 a.m. in the sale pavilion in Opelousas, Louisiana.
The sale will kick-off with more than 50 yearlings on offer, followed by weanlings, broodmares and horses of racing age. In addition, four stallions are cataloged including Kentucky Derby (G1) runner-up Closing Argument with nearly $25 million in progeny earnings and graded stakes winner D’Wildcat with more than $27 million in progeny earnings. Both stallions have been perennially near the top of the sire list in Louisiana. Mean Season and Run Production are also being offered.
As usual, the sale includes offspring of many of Louisiana’s top stallions, including Astrology, Gemologist, Court Vision, Star Guitar, Custom for Carlos and many others. Top national stallions represented include Fusaichi Pegasus, Goldencents and Bodemeister.
“This might be the strongest offering we’ve ever had for our open yearling and mixed sale,” said Foster Bridewell, sales director. “We had six horses go for $50,000 or more at our Select Yearling Sale last month, including a $145,000 sale-topper, so the market has been strong here, and we expect to draw buyers from around the region for this sale.”
