OBS October Yearling Sale catalog now online

The catalog for the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Company’s 2019 October Yearling Sale is now available via the OBS website at www.obssales.com. The online catalog’s main page contains a link to a sortable master index providing searchable pedigree and consignor information as well as access to pedigree updates occurring since the catalog was printed. Advanced search and filter capability has been added to allow shortlist creation. A link to instructions for using the new features can be found in the index header.

The iPad version of the catalog can be accessed via the equineline Sales Catalog App. The App allows users to download and view the catalog, receive updates and results, record notes and also provides innovative search, sort and rating capability. There are 204 yearlings (Hip No.’s 1 – 204) cataloged for the Selected Yearling Sale. Scheduled for Tuesday, October 8th, it will begin at 12:00 noon. Once again, walking videos of the Selected yearlings will be available on the website and the iPad version beginning on or about September 23rd. There are 393 yearlings (Hip No.’s 301 – 693) cataloged in the Open Yearling Sale, set for Wednesday, October 9th, getting under way at 10:30 a.m.

Supplemental entries are now being accepted for both the Selected and Open Sales through Friday, September 20th. Supplements to the Selected Sale will be sold Tuesday and cataloged beginning with Hip No. 205. Open Sale supplements will be sold Wednesday, cataloged starting with Hip No. 694. OBS Yearling Sale graduates are right at home in racing’s elite levels, in the winners’ circle at the Kentucky Derby (G1), Preakness (G1), Breeders’ Cup, Ascot and in Dubai, Korea and Japan. Winning throughout the world as well as coast to coast in North America, twenty-seven Yearling Sale graduates have surpassed the million dollar mark in earnings. The latest is Michael Dubb, Madaket Stables LLC and Bethlehem Stables LLC’s 2019 catalog cover boy World of Trouble. The 4-year-old Florida-bred colt by Kantharos, who was consigned by Darsan Inc., Agent, to the 2016 August Sale, is currently on a streak of five straight stakes wins, the latest the $400,000 Jaipur Invitational Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park in June. Trained by Jason Servis, he has won grade one races on dirt and turf, compiled a 13-9-2-1 career record and earned $1,263,300 to date.

World of Trouble shares the 2019 catalog cover with Rockingham Ranch & Gelfenstein Farm’s X Y Jet, winner of the $2,500,000 Golden Shaheen (G1) at Meydan in March. It was the fifth graded stakes victory for the 7-year-old Florida-bred son of Kantharos, trained by Jorge Navarro, now 25-12-7-2 with earnings of $3,095,513. The newest star in the headlines is Amalio Ruiz-Lozano’s Ceci Valentina, winner of last Saturday’s $200,000 FTBOA Florida Sire Susan’s Girl Stakes at Gulfstream Park. Trained by Angel Rodriguez, the 2-year-old Florida-bred filly by Prospective has two wins and a third in three starts and has earned $162,750. Heading into the big races in the fall, 98 Yearling graduates have won or placed in 212 stakes races since the beginning of 2018, with 49 posting 76 stakes victories. They have won or placed in 39 graded stakes, a list including the grade one Ashland, Bing Crosby, Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, Carter, Golden Shaheen, Jaipur, Jockey Club Gold Cup, Santa Anita Sprint Championship, Test and Whitney.

The sale will be streamed live via the OBS website as well as the Blood-Horse, DRF and TDN websites.

Louisiana Bred Maclean’s Music Filly Tops Equine Sales Yearling Sale

Hip #33, a filly by  Maclean’s Music out of the Stormy Atlantic mare Sweet Jackie Jo was purchased by William and Corinne Heiligbrodt’s East Hickman for $145,000 to top the Sept. 5 Equine Sales of Louisiana’s Consignor Select Yearling Sale in Opelousas, La.

The sale topper was bred in Louisiana by and consigned by 4M Ranch.  a half sister to two Louisiana bred stakes winners Actif Storm and Atchata, as well as multiple stakes-placed Nurse Goodnight.

Equine Sales reported 133 horses were sold for gross receipts of $1,518,500.   The average price was $11,417, with a $6,000 median, and the 34 head that went unsold from 195 cataloged represented an RNA rate of 20.4%. The 2018 sale results reported 148 yearlings selling for a total $1,937,700 for an average price of $13,093 and median of $6,000, with an RNA rate of 28.2%.

East Hickman, with SBM as agent, also purchased the sale’s second-highest offering. The top selling colt, a son of Tapiture, Hip 133,  from the Select Sales consignment, was purchased for $75,000.

Bred in Louisiana by Cloyce C. Clark, the colt is out of the multiple grade 3-placed mare Humble Janet (by Humble Eleven), a half sister to stakes winner and multiple graded-placed Han Sense. The colt is a half brother to multiple stakes winner Shang.

The Jockey Club Considers Rule Regarding Breeding Stallions

The Jockey Club board of stewards, concerned with the narrowing of the diversity of the Thoroughbred gene pool, today announced its consideration of a rule to limit the annual breeding of individual stallions starting with the 2021 breeding season.

The Jockey Club, established in 1894, is the keeper of the American Stud Book and maintains the Principal Rules and Requirements of the American Studbook in order to ensure the welfare of the Thoroughbred breed.

As has been widely reported, the size of the North American foal crop has diminished significantly, from 37,499 in 2007 to the 20,500 estimated for 2020.

In 2007, 37 stallions reported in excess of 140 mares bred each from a total of 3,865 stallions. By 2010, that number had declined to 24. Since then, the number has nearly doubled to 43 stallions reporting 140 or more mares bred from a population of stallions that now stands at less than one-half that of 2007.

On the mare side, in 2007, 5,894 mares (9.5% of the total) were bred by stallions that covered more than 140 mares. By 2019, 7,415 mares (27% of the total) were covered by stallions with books of more than 140, a threefold increase.

The combination of these changes has resulted in a substantial increase in the percentage of foals produced by a discreet segment of stallions — signaling a worrisome concentration of the gene pool.

The board of stewards of The Jockey Club is considering a cap of 140 mares bred per individual stallion per calendar year in North America, phased-in, as follows:

  • Stallions entering stud service for the first time in 2020 would be exempt from the 140 limit through the 2023 season
  • Stallions that entered stud service in 2019 would be exempt through the 2022 season
  • Stallions that entered stud service in 2018 would be exempt through the 2021 season
  • Stallions that entered service in 2017 or prior would be subject to the 140 cap as of January 1, 2021

The stewards will continue to study the decreasing diversity of the Thoroughbred gene pool and its cause and potential effects over the course of time. As more data and analyses become available, the stewards may revise The Jockey Club’s approach to protecting the breed’s health and welfare.

Catherine “Cathy” Jones passed away from complications due to Alzheimer’s on Tuesday September 3, 2019 at the age of 73.Beloved wife of Colden R. “Butch” Jones. Devoted mother of Amy Kacpura, Alison Ferguson (Chris), and Brian Jones. Loving grandmother to Camille Kacpura and Georgia Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her parents, John Bernard Clements and Catherine Cleary Clements. She was born in New Orleans. Catherine was a graduate of St. James Major and Southeastern Louisiana University. She was long time employee of Maison Blanche, where she achieved the rank of Master Merchant for outstanding work in sales. She will be remembered for her kind smile and infectious laugh. Visitation will be held at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd., New Orleans from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2019 with a funeral mass to follow. Interment will be at All Saints Mausoleum. The family would like to thank the staff of Heritage Manor for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Press Release: Inaugural Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit to be Held at Thoroughbred Makeover

On October 1, 2019, the Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA), Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (TAA), Thoroughbred Incentive Program and Retired Racehorse Project (RRP) will join together to present the inaugural Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit, a conference focused on education and networking among those with a professional interest in the retraining and rehoming of Thoroughbreds after racing. The conference will be held the day before the start of preliminary competition at the Retired Racehorse Project’s annual Thoroughbred Makeover and National Symposium, presented by Thoroughbred Charities of America.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit will focus on topics such as finance, business management, board governance and grant and sponsorship-seeking best-practices. There will also be a roundtable session for individuals and organizations to discuss and idea-share on challenges affecting them.

“The Thoroughbred Makeover is the perfect opportunity to convene aftercare advocates for a couple hours to learn, discuss and share some best business practices,” said Erin Crady, executive director of TCA. “The session may be particularly helpful for grant-seeking nonprofit aftercare organizations, however most topics will be generalizable to for-profit retraining and rehoming operations as well.”

Featured speakers will include Mike Meuser, TAA president and a Lexington-based attorney with the law firm of Miller, Griffin & Marks whose specialty includes equine law and civil litigation and Jen Shah, TAA treasurer and a CPA who serves as the head of equine services for Dean Dorton, a Lexington-based financial consulting firm, as well as representatives from grant-funding organizations, including the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, Thoroughbred Charities of America, ASPCA and The Right Horse Initiative.

“We at the TAA are thankful for Mike Meuser and Jen Shah’s leadership and knowledge about both the nonprofit sector and the equine industry, and we think this will be a great experience for TAA-accredited organizations and those wanting to become accredited to learn from these experts,” said TAA operations consultant Stacie Clark.

The conference is a collaboration of the four presenting organizations in an effort to bring together the Thoroughbred aftercare community.

“Whether we work in the for-profit sector, for a non-profit organization or work to rehome or otherwise advocate for Thoroughbreds after racing as private individuals, we all often face similar challenges as both horse people and as professionals,” said Jen Roytz, executive director of the Retired Racehorse Project. “We worked hard to curate a collection of topics and speakers for this inaugural Summit that will offer valuable insight to those in all sectors of Thoroughbred aftercare, and we look forward to expanding the subjects broached in future years.”

Tickets for the Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit are free, however limited seating is available, so those planning to attend are asked to register. Parking at the Kentucky Horse Park is $5 per car without a Kentucky Horse Park or Thoroughbred Makeover parking pass.

The Thoroughbred Aftercare Summit will be held in the Covered Arena Lounge at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky on October 1 from 3:00 to 5:00. It is held in conjunction with the $100,000 Thoroughbred Makeover, a training competition for horses in their first year of retraining after retirement from racing. This year’s Makeover will feature approximately 450 Thoroughbreds coming from 40 states and 4 provinces to compete across ten disciplines, including barrel racing, competitive trail, dressage, eventing, field hunters, freestyle, polo, ranch work, show hunter and show jumping.
