Lucky Appeal is the First Winner for Louisiana Stallion Breaking Lucky!

Scott, Louisiana USAJanuary 30, 2024 – On January 27, Lucky Appeal became the first winner for Blue Star Racing’s stallion Breaking Lucky. In the $33,000 Maiden Special Weight at Sam Houston Race Park, Lucky Appeal rallied from the rear and won by a neck –covering 5-1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 1:07.72.

We are excited to have one of our Louisiana home-breds become Breaking Lucky’s first winner in open company,” said Dex Comardelle of Blue Star Racing.  All of us at Blue Star Racing want to wish a heartfelt congratulations to all the connections of Lucky Appeal. We can’t wait to see the rest of Breaking Lucky’s progeny get their start!”

Lucky Appeal placed in the top three in his last three races, including 3rd at Remington Park and 2nd at Sam Houston Race Park – both races were 6 furlongs on dirt. The 3-year-old gelding was bred by Blue Star Racing, is owned by Henry S. Witt Jr., and is trained by stakes-winning trainer Sarah Davidson. He is out of Mythic Appeal, a daughter of multiple graded stakes winner Successful Appeal. Mythic Appeal won nearly $122,000 where she was close to 50% ITM. As a broodmare, she has produced two winners from three starters so far.

Breaking Lucky successfully raced for the partnerships of West Point Thoroughbreds, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Eric Young, and R.A. Hill Stable. He won the 2015 Prince of Wales Stakes – the second leg of Canada’s Triple Crown – while defeating multiple G1 winner and Sovereign Award champion 3-year-old Shaman Ghost (Ghostzapper).

In 2016, Breaking Lucky won the G3 Seagram Cup Stakes at Woodbine. He went on to place in the G1 Clark Handicap, G1 Whitney Stakes, and G1 Stephen Foster Handicap.  Breaking Lucky was on the board in 10 graded stakes and two black type races, earning nearly $1.2 million.

Breaking Lucky’s sire, Lookin at Lucky (Smart Strike), is a dual Eclipse champion – 2009’s champion 2-year-old colt and 2010’s champion 3-year-old colt.  Standing in North America at Ashford Stud, he has made eight shuttle trips to Chile since 2012 where he has been extraordinarily successful, siring six of eight lifetime champions and 69% of his 74 lifetime black type winners.*

Breaking Lucky’s dam, the G1 stakes-placed Shooting Party (Sky Classic), broke her maiden in her first attempt and went on to place in the G1 Garden City Breeders’ Cup Handicap, G3 Pebbles Handicap, and G2 Nassau County Stakes. She produced Quake Lake (War Chant) – dam of multi-millionaire and Kentucky Derby winner Country House (Looking at Lucky) and G2 Gallorette Stakes winner Mitchell Road (English Channel). Her daughter, Double Guns Girl (Langfuhr) is dam to Twowaycrossing (English Channel) who placed last year in the Breeders’ Stakes and the G3 Ontario Derby.

Breaking Lucky stands for $2,500 at Blue Star Racing’s breeding facilities along with Pound for Pound, Rushie, and Count Alexander. Louisiana-bred Tumbarumba earned his first graded win in Fred W. Hooper

Amerman Racing LLC’s Tumbarumba fought tenaciously to the finish of Saturday’s $150,000 Fred W. Hooper (G3) to prevail by a nose at Gulfstream Park.

Tumbarumba ($18.80) closely monitored a contested early pace set by favored Hejazi and pressed by Expressman into the stretch before rallying in the stretch to record his first graded stakes victory, holding off a late bid by Castle Chaos. Steal Sunshine finished third.

Bob Baffert-trained Hejazi, who set or vied for the early pace past fractions of :23.53 and :45.69 for the first half mile, faded to fourth.

Tumbarumba ran a one-turn mile in 1:36.45 to give trainer Brian Lynch his 15 winners half-way through a highly successful Championship Meet at Gulfstream.

The late-developing 4-year-old gelded son of Oscar Performance won the Ellis Park Derby last August before finishing a close third in the Oklahoma Derby (G3) at Remington Park in September. He entered the Hooper off a second-place finish in the Louisiana Classic for state-breds at Fair Grounds Dec. 9.

“It’s been a great meet so far, and particularly winning with him,” Lynch said of Tumbarumba, who was bred by Coteau Grove Farms from the Street Sensemare Naive Enough. “He’s an Oscar Performance and he’s just a special horse to me.”

“I’ve always felt he’s better on the outside, so the outside draw was a good draw for him. He sort of got to stalk them, and he’s such a game horse when he can gets engaged in sort of a head bob. To run down [Bob] Baffert’s horse [Hejazi] as the chalk, that’s a thrill, too. All-around, just a neat, neat horse and I’m just so excited about him.”

A Look Back At The Fall Of The Metairie Race Course, Home To Lecomte

The Metairie Race Course, home to historic battles between racehorses Lexington and Lecomte, ultimately fell to one man’s vindictiveness

On January 20, 2024, New Orleans’s Fair Grounds Race Course will run the Grade 3 Lecomte Stakes, a preparatory race for the Kentucky Derby, in honor of the only horse who ever defeated the mighty Lexington. To beat him, Lecomte shattered an American speed record for the fastest four miles — a record that had stood unassailable for twelve years. Back then, the Fair Grounds had yet to exist. The two sons of Boston rivaled each other, breaking records, and mesmerizing a torn nation while running on the bayou silt sands of the Metairie Race Course, one of the premier race tracks in the antebellum era.

The Metairie ultimately fell to a fate embroiled by greed and vindictiveness. Charles T. Howard was the “Lottery King” of Louisiana. He had spearheaded the Louisiana State Lottery Company for years as its president, much to his financial benefit. His fleet of yachts was just one of his many hobbies. In late 1870, he added the Jennie Bonnie to his collection, a thirty-six-foot vessel that had notably sailed 6,000 nautical miles along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. But aside from providing Howard with cash to live life to its fullest, the lottery business was not one 1870s Louisiana citizens unanimously embraced. Some Louisianans called the lottery “evil.” Bishop Taylor, New Orleans’ reigning cleric, went as far as to castigate the lottery as an “illness and wantonness providing games for the lazy and useless people of the world.” The Daily Picayune wrote that the lottery “corrupts the youth of our city and State…robs honorable toil of its fruit…and saps the very morals of society.”
