It has come the attention ofthe LTBA that two mares were inadvertently left off of the ballot for Louisiana Broodmare of the Year.
Traditionally only mares with at least two stakes winners in the year are included on the ballot. However, exceptions have been made to include the dams of graded stakes horses.
Flashy Prize is the dam ofFree Like A Girl who won multiple stakes races in 2023 and is graded placed. Flashy Prize did not appear on the list for consideration, and was not included on the ballot.
Touch Magic is the dam of Touchuponastar who won multiple stakes races in 2023 and placed in the 2023 G3 Steve Sexton Mile Stakes. Touch Magic did not appear on the list for consideration, and was not included on the ballot.
The LTBA Board of Directors has decided that Flashy Prize and Touch Magic merit consideration for Louisiana Broodmare of the Year.Since many people have already mailed in their ballots, the Board has decided to hold a run-off election following the regular election.
The run-off will be between the Flashy Prize, Touch Magic and the broodmare that gets the most votes on the current ballot, which will be counted February 29th. The LTBA will mail run-off ballots as soon as they can be printed.

Hope List at Double Dam Farm in 2019. Barbara Livingston photo.
Two time Accredited Louisiana Bred Champion Filly or Mare, Hope List, was euthanized due to the infirmities of old age in October. She was thirty-two years old.
Unraced as a Two-Year-Old, Hope List gave us a hint of her class with four wins as a Three-Year-Old. At Four she was stakes placed in both the Honeymoon Stakes and Sangue Handicap. As a Five-Year-Old, Hope List broke into the stakes winning class with wins in the Red Camelia Handicap and in the Louisiana Champions Day Turf, where she handily beat the boys. She was also second in the Coca Cola Classic and the Vinery Matchmaker Stakes and third in the Sangue Handicap. She saved her best for her Six-Year-Old season with four stakes wins that included finally capturing the Sangue Handicap in addition to winning the Furl Sail Handicap, Red Camelia Handicap and finishing the year with a win in the Louisiana Champions Day Ladies. As a Seven-Year-Old she won her third Red Camelia Handicap and was stakes placed in both the Sangue Handicap and the Honeymoon Stakes. In all, Hope List won twenty races from eighty-one starts with twelve seconds and thirteen thirds for earnings of $601,475 for Owner/Breeder Delmar Caldwell. She was voted Champion Filly Or Mare in both 1995 and 1996.
As a broodmare, Hope List produced twelve foals, all of which raced, with nine winners and one stakes placed runner, Runaway From Itall.
Louisiana breds have proved time and again that they can compete with top runners all across the country. Over the weekend, Louisiana bred runners performed exceptionally well in open stakes in Iowa, Delaware and Kentucky.
On Friday, July 8th, Janet is Ready, a two-year-old Louisiana bred filly by Custom For Carlos out of Just Call Me Janet won the $100,000 Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes at Prairie Meadows. The Chasey Deville Pomier trainee took the lead soon after the start, led up the backstretch and held on to the lead despite a late challenge to win by a head in her 3rd start.
Then Saturday at Prairie Meadows, Free Like a Girl, also a Chasey Deville Pomier trainee, set the pace in the mile and one sixteenth $225,000 Iowa Oaks (G3). The three-year-old filly dueled with eventual second place runner Falconet around the turn, but failed to move for the lead and held on for third earning graded stakes sire status for El Deal, who leads the list of Louisiana Second Crop sires. Free Like a Girl, who is out of Flashy Prize, was voted 2021 Louisiana Bred two-year-old champion filly. She has started 3 times in 2022, winning two Louisiana bred stakes races, before placing in the G3 Iowa Oaks. Her record to date is 14-7-3-3 with $423,873 in earnings.
Also Saturday, 2021 Louisiana Bred three-year-old champion filly and 2021 Louisiana Horse of the Year, Cilla (California Chrome-Sittin At The Bar), placed second by half a length in the $100,000 Dashing Beauty Stakes at Delaware Park. A graded stakes winner at 3, Cilla has now accumulated $504,000 in 17 starts with 7 wins, 2 second and 3 thirds.
Then at Ellis Park, Louisiana Bred, Mystique Saboteur ran third among open company in the Pea Patch Overnight Stakes. The filly by Gun Runner out of Jemima’s Pearl, earlier this placed 2nd in the Goldfinsh Stakes at Prairie Meadows.
