Lucky Appeal is the First Winner for Louisiana Stallion Breaking Lucky!

Scott, Louisiana USA – January 30, 2024 – On January 27, Lucky Appeal became the first winner for Blue Star Racing’s stallion Breaking Lucky. In the $33,000 Maiden Special Weight at Sam Houston Race Park, Lucky Appeal rallied from the rear and won by a neck –covering 5-1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 1:07.72.

Lucky Appeal placed in the top three in his last three races, including 3rd at Remington Park and 2nd at Sam Houston Race Park – both races were 6 furlongs on dirt. The 3-year-old gelding was bred by Blue Star Racing, is owned by Henry S. Witt Jr., and is trained by stakes-winning trainer Sarah Davidson. He is out of Mythic Appeal, a daughter of multiple graded stakes winner Successful Appeal. Mythic Appeal won nearly $122,000 where she was close to 50% ITM. As a broodmare, she has produced two winners from three starters so far.

Breaking Lucky successfully raced for the partnerships of West Point Thoroughbreds, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Eric Young, and R.A. Hill Stable. He won the 2015 Prince of Wales Stakes – the second leg of Canada’s Triple Crown – while defeating multiple G1 winner and Sovereign Award champion 3-year-old Shaman Ghost (Ghostzapper).

In 2016, Breaking Lucky won the G3 Seagram Cup Stakes at Woodbine. He went on to place in the G1 Clark Handicap, G1 Whitney Stakes, and G1 Stephen Foster Handicap.  Breaking Lucky was on the board in 10 graded stakes and two black type races, earning nearly $1.2 million.

Breaking Lucky’s sire, Lookin at Lucky (Smart Strike), is a dual Eclipse champion – 2009’s champion 2-year-old colt and 2010’s champion 3-year-old colt.  Standing in North America at Ashford Stud, he has made eight shuttle trips to Chile since 2012 where he has been extraordinarily successful, siring six of eight lifetime champions and 69% of his 74 lifetime black type winners.*

Breaking Lucky’s dam, the G1 stakes-placed Shooting Party (Sky Classic), broke her maiden in her first attempt and went on to place in the G1 Garden City Breeders’ Cup Handicap, G3 Pebbles Handicap, and G2 Nassau County Stakes. She produced Quake Lake (War Chant) – dam of multi-millionaire and Kentucky Derby winner Country House (Looking at Lucky) and G2 Gallorette Stakes winner Mitchell Road (English Channel). Her daughter, Double Guns Girl (Langfuhr) is dam to Twowaycrossing (English Channel) who placed last year in the Breeders’ Stakes and the G3 Ontario Derby.

Lucky Appeal First Winner for Stallion Breaking Lucky

Breaking Lucky stands for $4,000 at Blue Star Racing in Louisiana.

 

Lucky Appeal  became the first winner for Louisiana stallion Breaking Lucky in winning a $33,000 open maiden race by a neck Jan. 27 at Sam Houston Race Park.

The 3-year-old gelding, owned by Henry S. Witt Jr. and trained by Sarah Davidson, rallied from last to run down Flotation Station near the wire. He raced 5 1/2 furlongs on a fast track in 1:07.72 under Richard Bracho. Bred in Louisiana by Blue Star Racing, Lucky Appeal is out of the Successful Appeal mare Mythic Appeal .

BREAKING LUCKY’S RACE RECORD

Breaking Lucky raced initially for Gunpowder Farms and delivered a victory in the 2015 Prince of Wales Stakes—the second leg of Canada’s Triple Crown—at Fort Erie and placed in the Ontario Derby (G3). The following year, he won the 2016 Seagram Cup Stakes (G3) at Woodbine and placed in four other graded stakes, including a second in the Clark Handicap (G1).

Breaking Lucky, the Canadian Classic Winning Son of Lookin at Lucky, arrives at Blue Star Racing in Louisiana for the 2023 Breeding Season!

Scott, Louisiana USA – September 26, 202 2– Blue Star Racing is excited to announce the arrival of Breaking Lucky to their breeding facilities in Scott, Louisiana. After beginning his stallion career at Blue Star Racing, he moved to Florida for the 2021 and 2022 breeding seasons.

“After many breeder’s requests, we’re excited to bring Breaking Lucky back to the bayou state,” says Dex Comardelle of Blue Star Racing. “It’s no secret Louisiana is one of the most lucrative breeding programs in the country, and with the recent passage of sports betting and Historical racing, we expect Louisiana purses to increase exponentially over the coming years. Now is the time to double down on Louisiana breeding.” 

Before retiring to Louisiana off the track, Breaking Lucky successfully raced for the partnerships of West Point Thoroughbreds, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Eric Young, and R.A. Hill Stable. 

While racing, Breaking Lucky won the Black Type Woodbine’s 2015 Prince of Wales Stakes – the second leg of Canada’s Triple Crown – while defeating MG1SW and 2015 Sovereign Award Champion 3-Year-Old Shaman Ghost (Ghostzapper). His dam, GSP Shooting Party (Sky Classic), broke her maiden in her first race. She was second in the G1 Garden City Breeders’ Cup Handicap and was third in both the G3 Pebbles Handicap and the G2 Nassau County Stakes. She had already produced two winners from her first two foals to race when she foaled Breaking Lucky – who went on to win $1,196,376. Currently, she is the dam of four winners including Quake Lake (War Chant) – the dam of G1 Kentucky Derby winner and G1P Country House (Looking at Lucky) and the G3 Gallorette Stakes winner Mitchell Road (English Channel).

First foal of Graded Stakes Winning Millionaire, Breaking Lucky, is a colt!

Morriston, Florida – January 29, 2021 —­ The first foal of Graded Stakes Winning Millionaire Breaking Lucky, was born January 29 at Blue Star Racing in Scott, Louisiana. Bred by 4M Ranch and Blue Star Racing, the colt is out of Anea (Unbridled’s Song / Desire to Excel, by Mt. Livermore) ­– who has already produced one winner out of two starters. Her dam, Desire to Excel, was a multiple stakes winner, graded stakes placed, and was on the board five out seven starts. She has produced three winners out of five starters, including one Black Type Winner.

 

“If there is one word that I can use to describe this colt, it would be STRONG,” said Blue Star Racing Owner Dex Comardelle. “He is nicely put together, has all the right angles, has good bone, conformation, and lots of leg! If this first colt is any indication of how the rest of Breaking Lucky’s crop will look, it’s going to be an exciting year.”

Blue Star Racing to Stand Breaking Lucky

Stallion is a half brother to the dam of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Country House.

Blue Star Racing in Louisiana announced May 7 it will add Breaking Lucky, a graded stakes-winning half brother to the dam of Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner Country House, to its stallion roster for 2020. The farm near Scott, La., bought the millionaire son of Lookin At Lucky prior to the Arkansas Derby (G1) from a racing partnership that included West Point Thoroughbreds, Reeves Thoroughbred Racing, Eric Young, and R. A. Hill Stable. Breaking Lucky has been retired.

“We are so excited because we are adding another graded stakes-winning millionaire to our roster,” said Blue Star Racing owner Dex Comardelle, who started standing multiple grade 1 winner Real Solution  in 2018. He leases the son of Kitten’s Joy  from Calumet Farm. “This is an opportunity for the breeders in our area to tap into a sire line that is red hot in Lookin At Lucky. You also are tapping into a very deep female family as well.”
