Champion Louisiana Bred filly Big World sold Monday, November 6, at the Fasig Tipton November Sale in Lexington, Kentucky for $725,000. The Grade 1 stakes winner brought the highest price to date for a Louisiana bred. She was among the top 25% of horses sold in the record breaking auction which saw the highest gross in the sale’s history. She was purchased by Katsumi Yoshida from the consignment of Bluewater Sales, LLC.

“This is a fine Grade 1 winning Louisiana Bred mare. She is by a stallion who stands here in Louisiana that is really turning heads,” says Roger Heitzmann, III, Secretary/Treasurer of the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association. “As I have said in the past, I see the path for Louisiana breds moving in a positive direction as we go forward.”

Bred in Louisiana by Curt Leake and Elm Tree Farm, LLC (Michelle & Jody Huckabay), Big World has earned $629,190 to date with a record of 7 wins and 5 thirds from 13 starts including the 2017 G1 La Troienne Stakes at Churchill Downs and the G3 Tempted Stakes at Aqueduct.  Her dam Tensas Wedding Joy is an unraced daughter of Broken Vow. She is by Custom For Carlos who is among the leading sires in Louisiana as well as the top 15 third crop sires currently standing in North America. Custom For Carlos stands at Clear Creek Stud in Folsom,  Louisiana for a 2018 fee of $3,500 Live Foal.

Louisiana breds continue to improve in value on the national sales stage. A full brother to Big World Sold in March of this year for $400,000 at Fasig Tipton Gulfsteam, while a year ago, another Louisiana bred, a colt by Curlin-Moonlight Love sold for $350,000 at Keeneland September.

READY PROSPECTOR Prince

OPELOUSAS, LA – Virginia Lazenby Racing Stable’s Ready Prospector was able to add a second stakes victory of the Evangeline Downs season to his steadily improving resume’ with a win in the $50,000 Evangeline Downs Prince. Ready Prospector had previously won the $75,000 D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity on July 29.

Sent right into contention by jockey Gerard Melancon, Ready Prospector allowed Calimor to take the lead on the backstretch and settled into second. The early fractions were strong as the quarter-mile was covered in 22.20 seconds and the half-mile went by in 45.74 seconds. Ready Prospector reclaimed the lead on the far turn and then turned away late challenges by Land Battle and Hardworkcleanlivin to win by 2-1/2 lengths. The final time for the six furlongs was 1:11.41 over the fast track.

Ready Prospector was bred in Louisiana by Virginia Lazenby and is trained by Oscar Modica. He has won two of his three lifetime starts and the $30,000 first-place purse increases his lifetime earnings to $80,200. Ready Prospector is by Custom for Carlos and out of the Not For Love mare, Vera Belle.

Ready Prospector paid $9 to win, $5.60 to place and $4 to show. Land Battle rallied late for second and paid $10.20 to place and $6.20 to show. Hardworkcleanlivin paid $3.60 to show.

Big World to Sell at Fasig-Tipton November

Maggi Moss will offer this year’s GI La Troienne S. winner Big World (Custom for Carlos–Tensas Wedding Joy, by Broken Vow) at the upcoming Fasig-Tipton November Sale through the Bluewater Sales consignment. The 4-year-old Louisiana bred filly, a five-time stakes winner, captured the 2015 GIII Tempted S. as a 2-year-old. She capped a four-race win streak with a 1 1/4-length victory in the May 5 La Troienne. On the board in all but one of 13 starts to date, Big World has won seven times for earnings of $629,190.

“Big World has taken me on a great journey and her victory in the La Troienne was a highlight of my career as an owner,” Moss said.

Big World’s juvenile full-sibling Gracida, a $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream purchase by Amr Zedan, was a front-running winner of his debut at Del Mar Saturday.

Louisiana Bred, Louisiana Sired Big World Wins G1 La Troienne

Louisiana’s 2016 3YO Champion filly, Big World (Custom For Carlos-Tensas Wedding Joy), won the prestigious  $300,000  La Troienne Stakes Presented by Spirited Funds (G1) at Churchill Downs May 5.

The Tom Amoss-trained Big World showcased her improving ability and mettle. The Maggi Moss colorbearer carved out early fractions of :23.75 and :48.28 and kept on finding more, refusing to let Romantic Vision by in the stretch. She captured the 1 1/16-mile test by 1 1/4 lengths on the undercard of the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1).

Amoss says of the win, “I classify Big World’s win in the G1 La Troienne as one of the biggest thrills of my training career and believe I can speak for Maggie [Moss] when I say it was one of her biggest thrills in racing.”

He goes onto say “I credit the Louisiana Bred racing program and how Big World was able to build confidence through the winter before having to face Grade 1 competition.”

Under her previous trainer, Tony Dutrow, Big World hinted at what she was capable of, most notably when she captured the 2015 edition of the Tempted Stakes (G3) in her fourth start. Since being transferred to Amoss by owner Maggie Moss last year, the solidly built filly quietly racked up three wins on the Louisiana circuit and headed into the La Troienne off a win in a 1 1/16 mile allowance race at Oaklawn Park March 30.

Bred in Louisiana by Curt Leake and Elm Tree Farm (Michelle and Jody Huckabay), Big World became the first grade 1 winner for her sire, who stands at Clear Creek Stud. She improved her record to seven wins from 11 starts with $608,820 in earnings.

Big World is the first Louisiana-bred G1 winner since Happy Ticket (Anet) won the 2005 G1 Ballerina Stakes.

Custom For Carlos is the first Louisiana stallion to sire a G1 winner in over 25 years. Free Spirit’s Joy (Joey Bob) won the 1991 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs, which at the time was a million dollar G1 Stakes.
