Aceguitar ($240) covered six furlongs in 1:12.47. Drewcitable, under Colby Hernandez, dueled with the winner, but settled for second, followed by Smokin’ Truth and Roaring Star Fire.

NINE STAKES TO BE CONTESTED ON LOUISIANA CUP DAY AT HARRAH’S LOUISIANA DOWNS THIS SATURDAY

Winner of the $60,000 Prelude Will Earn a Berth to the $200,000 Super Derby

on Saturday, September 9

Bossier City, LA – The fields are set for Louisiana Cup Day at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs on Saturday, August 5.  First post is 3:15 pm (Central) for card which will feature nine stakes, highlighted by the running of the $60,000 Super Derby Prelude.

The stakes for 3-year-olds will be contested on the Franks Turf Course at the distance of a mile and one-sixteenth this year. The winner will receive a berth to the $200,000 Super Derby on Saturday, September 9; the richest race of the 2017 Louisiana Downs Thoroughbred racing season.

Trainer Allen Landry conditions Magic Vow, the son of Private Vow out of the Broad Brush mare Whitewashed. The bay gelding is owned by Evelyn Benoit of Brittlyn Stable, Inc. This will be the first turf start for the bay gelding, who enters the race with a record of four wins from eight starts and earnings of $199,900.

“He’s bred for the grass and he has shown us he can route,” said Landry.

Trainer Brad Cox has entered two runners: Royal by Nature and Mr. Misunderstood.  Current leading rider Richard Eramia will ride Royal by Nature, who won the $75,000 SundaySilence over the Franks Turf Course here last September.

Mr. Misunderstood with Chris Rosier up, will make his first start since competing in the Grade 3, Illinois Derby on April 22. He was a multiple turf winner last season at Fair Grounds.

Trainer Efren Loza, Jr. sends in St George Stables LLC’s Jilotepec, a lightly raced colt by Into Mischief, who has won two of his three career efforts and will make his first start on the grass.

The Prelude field also includes Fast Talkin Man, a Texas-bred son of Oratory, trained by Danny Pish. He is stakes-placed on turf and will break from the rail under rider Luis Quinonez. Queeten has won two allowance races this meet for trainer Sarah Delany and will make his turf debut under rider Emanuel Nieves. Trainer Charles Hukill will give a leg up to Aubrie Green on Score’s Choice and Louisiana Downs leading trainer Joey Foster will saddle Mizztic Tale, a son of Mizzen Mast. Gerardo Mora will guide the Kentucky-bred from the far outside post.

The Super Derby Prelude is set as the eighth race of the card, with an approximate post time of 6:24 pm.

“I am proud of the race card that racing secretary David Heitzmann and the racing office team put together for Louisiana Cup Day,” said Trent McIntosh, Louisiana Downs assistant general manager.  “It’s very difficult to get this many competitive races with full fields especially on all stakes days, but they did just that.”

$50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile

The first stakes of the afternoon is the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile for Louisiana-bred 2-year-old colts and geldings.  A field of seven will compete at six furlongs on the main track.

Scott Brown’s Aceguitar, a son of noted Louisiana champion Star Guitar, will wheel back following his runner-up finish in the $105,000 Texas Thoroughbred Futurity at Lone Star Park on July 22.

“He’s a promising young horse and came out of the stakes at Lone Star in good shape,” said trainer Danny Pish. “We think he deserves a shot.”

$50,000 John Henry

The first turf feature of the card is the $50,000 John Henry with a field of nine going a mile and one-sixteenth over the Franks Turf Course. This is one of the two features transferred from Evangeline Downs for the Louisiana Cup Day card.

Doug Wall’s homebred Ibaka is closing in on the half-million dollar earning mark, with stakes wins at Sam Houston Race Park, Will Rogers Downs and Remington Park. Bret Calhoun trains the 5-year-old son of Uncle Abbie, named for Serge Ibaka, who played for the Oklahoma Thunder from 2009 -2016.  Ibaka drew the rail for his Louisiana Downs debut and will be ridden by Eddie Martin, Jr.

“He is a solid horse and has remained sound and healthy,” said Calhoun. “This race fell at a good time and will set him up nicely for his return to Remington Park and the Oklahoma-bred stakes.”

$50,000 Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Sprint

Eleven fillies and mares will compete six furlongs in the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Sprint.

Defending champion Look Into My Eyes, a 5-year-old daughter of City Zip, owned by Kathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centofanti returns. Trained by Loza, she will be ridden by Colby Hernandez, her winning pilot in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Mademoiselle Stakes at Evangeline Downs on July 8.

Loza is based in south Florida, but has shipped several stakes runners to Texas and Louisiana in the past three years.  He is looking forward to returning to Louisiana Downs on August 5.

“Louisiana Downs has a nice turf course and we had success there last summer,” said Loza.

$50,000 Louisiana Cup Distaff

A full field of 12 accredited Louisiana-bred fillies and mares will take to the Franks Turf Course for the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Distaff.

Trainer Ron Faucheux won the $100,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic last year with Sunbean, the intrepid turf specialist bred and owned by Brittlyn Stable, Inc. The same noted connections will return to Louisiana Downs with Safari Calamari, a 5-year-old mare by Half Ours.

“She ran second to Believe in Bertie (in the $60,000 Red Camelia Stakes) at Fair Grounds,” he said. “This mare is much better on the turf, but we needed to get a race in her. She ran at Louisiana Downs on July 12 over a sloppy track. She lost by a nose; but she ran well.”

Richard Eramia, who won the Lone Star Park riding title yesterday, will guide Safari Calamari from post position three. She has earned $178,780 with six wins from 15 starts.

$50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies

Another full field of 2-year-old accredited Louisiana-bred fillies in the six-furlong $50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Janae, won the $100,000 Texas Thoroughbred Futurity two weeks ago at Lone Star Park, drew post 12 in the field of 13.  Purchased for $16,000 by Susan Moulton, the daughter of Closing Argument has already won $77,000. She is trained by Brandon Jenkins, the son of longtime Texas horseman Bobby Jenkins. She will reunite with jockey Kerwin Clark on Saturday.

“She’s doing really well and my only concern is that this will be her first time going three-quarters (of a mile),” he said. “Susan knew Kerwin (Clark) when she used to gallop at Lone Star Park, so all the credit for her last race goes to him. She drew the ten-hole that day, so we are hoping he can angle her in again.”

Jenkins began the Lone Star meet with three horses and now is up to 12 in his barn.

“It’s been pretty amazing,” he said. “I’m hoping she can run a good race at Louisiana Downs. It means a lot to a ‘small time trainer’ to have a nice filly like Janae.”

Matalona Thoroughbreds LLC’s  Feisty Embrace is one of several fillies looking to step up to stakes company. Trainer Al Stall, Jr, will be in Saratoga this weekend, but will watch the race.

“I scratched her out of the Evangeline Stakes because I think this distance suits her,” he said. “She tries hard and drew well for her stakes debut.”

$50,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic

The $50,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic attracted 12 turf runners and two also-eligibles going a mile and one-sixteenth over the Franks Turf Course. Several competitors from the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Turf run here on July 17, will return to action, including the winner, Trust Factor.

The 4-year-old colt owned by Scrivener Stables, defeated five rivals under jockey Colby Hernandez.

“He liked the firm turf and Colby gave him a very good ride,” said trainer Mike Maker.

Runner-up Eden Grey’s Kitten, trained by Steve Flint, will return. The 5-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy had previously won two in a row, including the $60,000 Costa Rising at Fair Grounds.

$50,000 Louisiana Cup Sprint

The $50,000 Louisiana Cup Sprint will run as race seven. The six-furlong main track dash drew a field of 14.  Trainer H.B. Johnson, who is based at Louisiana Downs, has two entrants in final preparation for this feature. Icy Gentleman, bred and owned by Ironwater Farms Joint Venture, ran fourth in the 2016 edition of this race and has banked over $312,000 in fifteen starts. He won the Louisiana Premier Night Sprint on February 11 and was second to Jockamo’s Songone month ago in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Sprint at Evangeline Downs. Diego Saenz will ride the 4-year-old Icy Gentleman and Eguard Tejera will pilot All About Interest for ownersTimothy Riley and Gregory Hoffman.  The 8-year-old, sired by Interest Rate ran second in the 2015 Louisiana Cup Sprint.

Recent Louisiana Downs allowance winner Dickman Legacy Ranch LLC’s Spring Value, will make his stakes debut for conditioner Steve Asmussen. The 4-year-old colt by Interactif will be ridden by Richard Eramia.

$50,000 Opelousas

Originally scheduled at Evangeline Downs, the $50,000 Opelousas at one mile over the Franks Turf Course drew an overflow field of fillies and mares.

Artistic License, a 6-year-old daughter of Heart of the Storm will make her 37th career start for Carl Moore Management, LLC and trainer Bret Calhoun.

“She was a little unlucky at Lone Star Park,” said Calhoun. “She won the River Cities last year on Super Derby day, so we know she likes the Louisiana Downs turf course.”

NOMINATIONS CLOSED FOR LOUISIANA CUP DAY AT HARRAH’S LOUISIANA DOWNS

Nine Stakes to be Contested on Saturday, August 5

Bossier City, LA – Nominations for the annual Louisiana Cup Day at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs on Saturday, August 5 have closed with tremendous interest from horsemen.

The Louisiana Cup Day program will feature six divisional stakes for horses bred in Louisiana, with four six-furlong main track stakes as well as the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic and the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Distaff on the turf. Two additional turf stakes, the $50,000 John Henry and the$50,000 Opelousas, originally scheduled at Evangeline Downs, will also be on the Louisiana Cup Day card.  Purses for the all-stakes August 5 program will total $460,000.

The $60,000 Super Derby Prelude for 3-year-olds going a mile and one-sixteenth on the Franks Turf Course closed with 23 nominations. The winner of the stakes receives a berth to the $200,000 Super Derby on Saturday, September 9; the richest race of the 2017 Louisiana Downs Thoroughbred racing season. The move to the grass course marks a departure for the track’s signature Super Derby, which had its first running in 1980, and had a noted history as a graded stake contested at nine furlongs on the dirt.

Trainer Efren Loza, Jr intends to run Taco in the Prelude. The Kentucky-bred son of Gio Ponti is owned by V. A. Racing Stables LLC and Amancio Alonzo and has won four of his five turf starts. He has not raced since finishing second in the $103,380 Pasadena Stakes on March 19 at Santa Anita. S”

“He got a small cut on one of his legs so we had to give him some time off,” said Loza.  “He has resumed training and should be ready for the Prelude.”

The nominees include several stakes winners who will be making their debut on grass.

Trainer Allen Landry conditions Magic Vow, the high-earner of the 23 nominated runners for the Prelude. The son of Private Vow out of the Broad Brush mare Whitewashed has earned $199,900 for Brittlyn Stable, Inc. This will be the first turf start for the bay gelding, but Landry believes his charge will handle the surface switch.

“He’s bred for the grass and he has shown us he can route,” said Landry. “We’ll bring “Boo Boo”(jockey Kerwin Clark) as he knows him well.”

John S. Turner’s Impressive Student is also nominated and under consideration according to trainer Morris Nicks. Sired by Student Council, Impressive Student had a good meet earlier this year at Fair Grounds, breaking his maiden on the turf on January 29, and scoring again at the allowance level on March 3. He competed at Louisiana Downs in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends, finishing sixth to Trust Factor.

“The older horses might have outclassed him, “said Nicks. “He was training well after a layoff, and we debated running him in the Legends or waiting for the Prelude. We are not 100% certain we will run on August 5, but so far, everything looks good.”

Multiple stakes winner Rumpole, bred and owned by Joe Archer of Fletcher Properties Inc., is another horse making his first start on the grass. The son of leading Texas sire, Too Much Bling won the $65,000 Jim’s Orbit at Sam Houston Race Park and followed that up with a victory in another race for Texas-bred colts, the $50,000 Groovy Stakes. Trainer Robert Young shipped him to Lone Star Park where he won the $65,000 Texas Stallion Stakes under current top Louisiana Downs rider Richard Eramia.

“I was hoping to try him on the turf at Lone Star, but could never get a race for him,” said Young. “I haven’t got a clue if he’ll like it or not, but he’s really training well.”

Loza has also nominated St George Stables LLC’s Jilotepec for the Prelude. The lightly raced colt by Into Mischief, who has won two of his three career efforts.

“He has never run on the grass, but we think he would be good,” added Loza.

Local horsemen who have nominated runners for the Prelude include Louisiana Downs leading trainer Joey Foster with Mizztic Tale; Charles Hukill with Score’s Choice and former jockey, Beverly Burress, who conditions Charlie Ballado.

The draw for the nine features on Louisiana Cup will take place on Saturday, July 29.

Louisiana Cup Day News and Notes

Evangeline Downs hosted Louisiana Legends Night on Saturday, July 8 with eight stakes races for Louisiana-breds.

It was a big night for trainer Edward J. Johnston and Pacific Pink, who won the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Distaff. The multiple stakes winning mare is owned by Keith Plaisance, and has won nine of her 21 career starts. She ran second here in the 2015 Louisiana Distaff and returned six weeks later to win the Elge Raspberry Stakes.  The 5-year-old daughter of Private Vow out of the Robyn Dancer mare, Truly Romantic, is closing in on the half-million mark in career earnings. A return to Louisiana Downs in the $50,000 Louisiana Distaff is on the radar for the talented mare.

“She’s run three races very hard this year, and we are very proud of her,” said Johnston. “Her win at Evangeline on Saturday was pretty impressive in that she broke outward and was out of it for the first half-mile. Colby (Hernandez) knew what he had to do and got the job done.”

EARLY INTEREST IS HIGH FOR THE LOUISIANA CUP AT HARRAH’S LOUISIANA DOWNS ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 5

Bossier City, LA – Live Thoroughbred racing at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs began on May 6 and the first major stakes program, Louisiana Cup Day, is set for Saturday, August 5.

While nominations for the annual Louisiana Cup do not close until July 22, interest is high for the seven divisional stakes for horses bred in Louisiana.  Purses totally $360,000 will be divided among the features which include four six-furlong main track stakes as well as the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic and the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Distaff to be contested at a mile and one-sixteenth on the turf. The program also includes the $60,000 Prelude, a 1 1/16-mile race on the turf for 3-year-olds that serves as the local prep race for the Super Derby.

Trainer Efren Loza, Jr. has several horses pointed to Louisiana Cup Day. As previously reported by Mary Rampellini of the Daily Racing Form, Loza intends to run Taco in the $60,000 Prelude, with the intention of returning for the $200,000 Super Derby on September 9. The Kentucky-bred son of Gio Ponti won his first four starts, including the $50,000 Texas Heritage Stakes for 3-year-olds on February 25 at Sam Houston Race Park. He has not raced since finishing second in the $103,380 Pasadena Stakes on March 19 at Santa Anita. S

“He got a small cut on one of his legs so we had to give him some time off,” said Loza.  “He has resumed training and should be ready for the Louisiana Downs stakes.”

One other horse he has under consideration for the Prelude is St George Stables LLC’s Jilotepec, a lightly raced colt by Into Mischief, who has won two of his three career efforts.

“He has never run on the grass, but we think he would be good,” he added.

Loza will run Look Into My Eyes this Saturday in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Mademoiselle Stakes and then back to Louisiana Downs on Louisiana Cup Day.  This will be the first start of the year for the 5-year-old daughter of City Zip who is owned by Kathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centofanti.  She has won seven of her 14 career starts, including the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Sprint here last August.

Loza is based in south Florida, but has shipped several stakes runners to Texas and Louisiana in the past three years.  He is looking forward to returning to Louisiana Downs on August 5.

“Louisiana Downs has a nice turf course and we had success there last summer,” said Loza.

Sunbean registers first grass win in Louisiana Cup Turf Classic

The millionaire Sunbean won the first turf race of his career Saturday at Louisiana Downs, when he forged to a length win over Benwill in the $75,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic. It was another nose back in third to Berniestrike.

The Turf Classic was one of seven stakes on the card. The program worth $450,000 included the Prelude, the prep for next monthʼs Grade 3, $400,000 Super Derby that was won by Texas Chrome ($8.20). The other stakes were divisional races restricted to horses bred in Louisiana.

Sunbean ($16.40) had made just one other start on turf in his career, and finished fourth in the $60,000 Dixie Poker Ace in February at Fair Grounds. He was content to stalk the pace Saturday, settling in behind Berniestrike and Hail to the Nile, who dueled through an opening quarter-mile in 23.64 seconds, a half-mile in 48.36, and six furlongs in 1:12.39.

Sunbean, riding the rail, angled off the fence into the stretch and was in a drive to the wire. He covered 1 1/16 miles on firm ground in 1:41.89. Richard Eramia was aboard the winner for trainer Ron Faucheux.

String King, who was seeking his fourth consecutive win in the Louisiana Cup Turf Classic, finished seventh as the 4-5 favorite.

Sunbean was winning his 14th career stakes race. He is a son of Brahms and races for his breeder, Brittlyn Stable. Sunbean has now won 15 of 25 career starts for earnings of $1,112,250.

Jockey Diego Saenz had a double on the card, taking the opener, the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies, with Chases Dixie Belle ($8.80), and the second race, the $75,000 Louisiana Cup Distaff, with Calamity Jane ($4.60). Saenz is based at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La.

Chases Dixie Belle became a stakes winner, when she stalked the pace and darted clear by two lengths over Long Legged Model. The winner covered six furlongs on a fast track in 1:12.78. Chases Dixie Belle is by My Pal Charlie and she races for Bobby Salome and is trained by Charles Hukill.

Calamity Jane also became a stakes winner Saturday, when she defeated older rivals in the Distaff. The filly, a 3-year-old by Cowboy Cal, closed for a three-quarter length win over Kinky Vow. Calamity Jane covered 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:42.83. Eddie Johnston Jr. trains the winner for Keith Plaisance.

Gentlemengentlemen ($26.60) set the pace and prevailed by a half-length over Street Honor in the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile. The winner covered six furlongs in 1:12.63. Williams Naupac was aboard for Wilburn Smith and trainer Bob Schultz. Gentlemengentlemen, who is now 2 for 2, is a son of Yankee Gentleman.

Greeleyʼs Wish ($7.20) won his third consecutive race – and first in a stakes – in the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Sprint. He was a half-length winner over So Sorry Ruston. Greeleyʼs Wish covered six furlongs in 1:10.93. John Jacinto was aboard the horse, who is a son of Greeleyʼs Galaxy, for owner-trainer Brian Schweda.

Look Into My Eyes ($13.20) won her fourth race in her last five starts when she sailed home by 2 1/2 lengths over Smittys Cougar in the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Edgard Zayas was aboard for trainer Efren Loza Jr. Look Into My Eyes is by City Zip [2] and she races for Kathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centofanti. She covered six furlongs in 1:10.35.
