Keeneland Adds Horses of Racing Age to April Sale

Addition designed to complement 2-year-olds, offer variety to buyers.

Keeneland has expanded the April Sale, which traditionally features only 2-year-olds in training, to include horses of racing age this year, the Lexington operation announced Jan. 30.

The April Sale is scheduled for April 9, immediately following the spring meet opening weekend that kicks off April 4. Headlining the nine stakes that weekend are the $1 million Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) and $500,000 Central Bank Ashland Stakes (G1), both classic prep races.

“Keeneland’s spring meet is a convergence of horsemen heading home from their winter bases,” said Bob Elliston, Keeneland’s vice president of racing and sales. “The addition of a horses of racing age component to the April Sale complements our racing program and offers variety to buyers in town for opening weekend.”

Entry deadline for the online horses of racing age catalog is March 15, and entries for the 2-year-olds in training catalog close Feb. 1. Supplemental entries will be accepted after both deadlines.

Keeneland conducted the April 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale from 1993-2014. At the 2014 April Sale, the auction house sold 38 head for a total of $8,769,000 and an average of $230,763, including future champions Lady Eli and Roy H. The sale topper, a Malibu Moon  colt out of Tap Your Heels, the dam of Tapit , brought $1 million. The sale has been on hiatus since then.

EQUINE SALES COMPANY Announces Complete 2019 Auction Schedule

Yearlings Sales Dates Confirmed
Equine Sales Company has released its complete 2019 schedule of sales after previously announcing that the 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale will be held April 2. All auctions will be held in Opelousas, Louisiana.

The 2019 schedule includes the
Consignor Select Yearling Sale on
Thursday, September 5

,
and the Open Yearling and Mixed Sale on Sunday, October 27.
While the 2-year-old sale is being held about a month earlier than in previous years, the other two sales are essentially on the same spot on the calendar.

“We believe the earlier 2-year-old sale will work well for buyers and consignors according to the feedback we received,” said Sales Director Foster Bridewell. “But we also received word from our customers that the other two sales were already well placed on the calendar. Our select sale last year was one of our best ever, so we want to stick with what is working.”

2019 DATE FOR 2YR OLD IN TRAINING SALE MOVED TO
APRIL 2ND!!
Equine Sales Company has announced that its 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, traditionally held in early May, will instead be held earlier in 2019. The dates have been set for Tuesday, April 2, with the breeze show set for Sunday, March 31, in Opelousas, Louisiana.
“Our Board of Directors and Sales Committee responded to feedback received from our dedicated buyers and consignors and think this will be good fit for everyone,” said Foster Bridewell, Sales Director of Equine Sales Company. “Many 2-year-olds in this region have traditionally been prepared to race opening weekends of Evangeline Downs, Louisiana Downs and Lone Star Park. This shift in date will allow buyers and their trainers to purchase horses that will hopefully be ready to run in the early Summer races.”
Consignment information and deadlines for the 2-year-old sale will be posted in the future at www.equinesalescompany.com

Pair of $50,000 Fillies Pace Equine Sales Company Open Yearling and Mixed Sale

(October 29, 2018 – Opelousas, Louisiana) – The Equine Sales Company Open Yearling and Mixed Sale, held Sunday in Opelousas, Louisiana, got off to a strong start with a pair of Louisiana-bred yearling fillies bringing $50,000 apiece early in the auction, and the final results showed big increases from last year.
All told, the yearling and mixed sessions combined for sales of $333,100 with 85 of 126 head sold for an average price of $3,919. Last year’s auction reported gross sales of $203,350 with 84 of 183 sold with an average of $2,421. Last year’s top-seller came in at $17,000.
“It was great to see the upward trend continue in Louisiana after we had a very successful select yearling sale in September,” said Foster Bridewell, sales director. “Having two horses bring $50,000 is a big deal for the open yearling and mixed sale, plus we had good results overall with a jump in average over last year.”
The first filly to bring $50,000 was hip 10, a daughter of Proud Citizen who sold to Charles Castille from the consignment of Brown’s Thoroughbred Farm. Named Gator Proud, the April filly is a full sister to multiple Grade 3 winner Miz Ida out of the stakes winning and Grade 3-placed Green Alligator mare May Gator.
The other $50,000 filly was hip 18, Blessed Anna, who sold to Virginia Lazenby from Select Sales, agent for Coteau Grove Farms LLC. The February foal is from the first crop of the Medaglia d’Oro stallion Fast Anna and out of Pleasantly Blessed, a multiple stakes winner by Pleasant Tap whose three foals to race are all winners.
For complete results, go to www.equinesalescompany.com.
This marked the final sale of the year for Equine Sales Company. Next up in 2019 is the 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale set for April 2.

More than 130 Head Consigned to Equine Sales Company Open Yearling and Mixed Sale

Equine Sales Company has announced a catalog of 134 head for its upcoming Opening Yearling and Mixed Sale to be held Sunday, October 28, at 12 noon in Opelousas, Louisiana. The sale company is still accepting supplements, so the catalog is likely to grow before the auction.

The yearling session will include 55 head and will be immediately followed by the mixed session with weanlings, 2-year-olds and broodmares. Many of the broodmares will sell in-foal.

This sale comes on the heels of the Consignor Select Yearling Sale last month, which was one of the most successful auctions since the sale company was founded in 2012. The September sale posted big increases over last year with gross sales of nearly $2 million.

“We had a great auction last month so we hope that will carryover to this sale,” said Foster Bridewell, sales director. “The catalog for this sale is smaller than last year but it has plenty of quality and should provide options for just about every buyer.”

The online catalog is available at www.equinesalescompany.com.

Keeneland 2019 April Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale Set For April 9

Keeneland officials announced September 14, 2018, that the 2019 April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale will be held Tuesday, April 9. The Preview Day, which will offer breezes over both the main dirt track and turf course, will be held Monday, April 8.

“Keeneland looks forward to the return of the April Sale, and we anticipate we will see several 2018 September Yearling Sale graduates participating,” Keeneland Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston said.

“The April Sale affords horsemen several unique advantages,” Elliston said. “One is the opportunity to present a consignment before a number of prominent owners and trainers at Keeneland for opening weekend of the Spring Meet, which begins April 5, and includes the Toyota Blue Grass. Another is the chance to breeze your juvenile over Keeneland’s dirt track and turf course, two of the best racing surfaces in the country.”

Keeneland conducted its April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale from 1993-2014. The sale has been on hiatus since 2015.

The April Sale has a proven record of success, having produced 2017 champions Lady Eli and Roy H in its final edition in 2014. The auction counts six classic winners among its graduates: Belmont (G1) winner Palace Malice; Preakness (G1) winner and champion Lookin At Lucky; Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness winner and champion Big Brown; Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner and champion Thunder Gulch; and Kentucky Oaks (G1) winners Keeper Hill and Gal in a Ruckus. Champion Beautiful Pleasure also is an April sale graduate.

Louisiana Bred Songandaprayer Filly Tops Texas Yearling and Mixed Sale

A Louisiana-bred filly by Songandaprayer topped the yearling session of Monday’s Texas Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale at Lone Star Park. Held jointly by the Texas Thoroughbred Association and the track, the auction reported 44 of 82 yearlings sold for a total of $414,300. The median jumped 72.2 percent from last year’s mark of $4,500, and the average dropped from $11,556 to $9,415 this year. The buy-back rate this year was 46.3 percent.

Last year the yearling session grossed $681,800 with 59 of 90 sold.

Susan Naylor signed the ticket on the sale-topper with a price of $30,000 on hip 83. The March filly from the consignment of Clear Creek Stud, agent, is out of the stakes-placed Lion Heart mare Those Lion Eyes, whose one foal to race is a winner.

“Obviously we would have liked to see some bigger numbers today, but overall the middle and lower-end of the market seemed fine,” said Tim Boyce, sales director. “We just didn’t have the really exceptional individuals we had last year, so the average was down a bit but it’s encouraging that the median jumped almost 75 percent. It was also good to see the mixed session numbers jump compared to last year.”

In the mixed session this year, 18 of 24 head sold for $93,100 with an average of $5,172 and a median of $2,350. Those numbers compared favorably to last year’s mixed session that grossed $30,000 with 13 of 36 head sold for an average of $2,357 and median of $1,400.

The highest-priced horse in the mixed session was a weanling filly by Too Much Bling who sold for $19,000 to Naylor from the consignment of Benchmark Training Center, agent for the Estate of Ed Few. A good portion of the mixed session was composed of horses from Few, one of the state’s leading breeders and owners who passed away in April.

The Texas 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale is next up on the sale calendar at Lone Star and will be held April 9.

Nearly 120 Head Consigned to Texas Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale

The Texas Thoroughbred Association and Lone Star Park have announced a catalogue of 119 head for the upcoming Texas Summer Yearling and Mixed Sale. The auction will be held August 27 at 12 noon at the Texas Thoroughbred Sales Pavilion on the grounds of Lone Star Park.
Other sale events include a pre-sale party on the night of August 26 and a seminar that morning with representatives from The Jockey Club and equineline.com explaining the new digital certificates for foal registration. The seminar will include a demonstration of the new process and a question and answer session, so the TTA encourages all horsemen to attend in order to better understand the upcoming changes.
The catalogue includes 90 yearlings and 29 weanlings and broodmares. Many of the weanlings and broodmares are consigned by the Estate of Ed Few. The noted Texas breeder and owner passed away earlier this year.
“I think the quality of the catalogue has ticked up a notch this year,” said Tim Boyce, sales director. “We had two Texas-breds sell at this auction for $100,000 apiece last year, and that really proved that the market is still vibrant here for horses in Texas and around the region.”
