NOMINATIONS CLOSED FOR LOUISIANA CUP DAY AT HARRAH’S LOUISIANA DOWNS
Nine Stakes to be Contested on Saturday, August 5
Bossier City, LA – Nominations for the annual Louisiana Cup Day at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs on Saturday, August 5 have closed with tremendous interest from horsemen.
The Louisiana Cup Day program will feature six divisional stakes for horses bred in Louisiana, with four six-furlong main track stakes as well as the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic and the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Distaff on the turf. Two additional turf stakes, the $50,000 John Henry and the$50,000 Opelousas, originally scheduled at Evangeline Downs, will also be on the Louisiana Cup Day card. Purses for the all-stakes August 5 program will total $460,000.
The $60,000 Super Derby Prelude for 3-year-olds going a mile and one-sixteenth on the Franks Turf Course closed with 23 nominations. The winner of the stakes receives a berth to the $200,000 Super Derby on Saturday, September 9; the richest race of the 2017 Louisiana Downs Thoroughbred racing season. The move to the grass course marks a departure for the track’s signature Super Derby, which had its first running in 1980, and had a noted history as a graded stake contested at nine furlongs on the dirt.
Trainer Efren Loza, Jr intends to run Taco in the Prelude. The Kentucky-bred son of Gio Ponti is owned by V. A. Racing Stables LLC and Amancio Alonzo and has won four of his five turf starts. He has not raced since finishing second in the $103,380 Pasadena Stakes on March 19 at Santa Anita. S”
“He got a small cut on one of his legs so we had to give him some time off,” said Loza. “He has resumed training and should be ready for the Prelude.”
The nominees include several stakes winners who will be making their debut on grass.
Trainer Allen Landry conditions Magic Vow, the high-earner of the 23 nominated runners for the Prelude. The son of Private Vow out of the Broad Brush mare Whitewashed has earned $199,900 for Brittlyn Stable, Inc. This will be the first turf start for the bay gelding, but Landry believes his charge will handle the surface switch.
“He’s bred for the grass and he has shown us he can route,” said Landry. “We’ll bring “Boo Boo”(jockey Kerwin Clark) as he knows him well.”
John S. Turner’s Impressive Student is also nominated and under consideration according to trainer Morris Nicks. Sired by Student Council, Impressive Student had a good meet earlier this year at Fair Grounds, breaking his maiden on the turf on January 29, and scoring again at the allowance level on March 3. He competed at Louisiana Downs in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends, finishing sixth to Trust Factor.
“The older horses might have outclassed him, “said Nicks. “He was training well after a layoff, and we debated running him in the Legends or waiting for the Prelude. We are not 100% certain we will run on August 5, but so far, everything looks good.”
Multiple stakes winner Rumpole, bred and owned by Joe Archer of Fletcher Properties Inc., is another horse making his first start on the grass. The son of leading Texas sire, Too Much Bling won the $65,000 Jim’s Orbit at Sam Houston Race Park and followed that up with a victory in another race for Texas-bred colts, the $50,000 Groovy Stakes. Trainer Robert Young shipped him to Lone Star Park where he won the $65,000 Texas Stallion Stakes under current top Louisiana Downs rider Richard Eramia.
“I was hoping to try him on the turf at Lone Star, but could never get a race for him,” said Young. “I haven’t got a clue if he’ll like it or not, but he’s really training well.”
Loza has also nominated St George Stables LLC’s Jilotepec for the Prelude. The lightly raced colt by Into Mischief, who has won two of his three career efforts.
“He has never run on the grass, but we think he would be good,” added Loza.
Local horsemen who have nominated runners for the Prelude include Louisiana Downs leading trainer Joey Foster with Mizztic Tale; Charles Hukill with Score’s Choice and former jockey, Beverly Burress, who conditions Charlie Ballado.
The draw for the nine features on Louisiana Cup will take place on Saturday, July 29.

TRUST FACTOR GAME WINNER OF THE $100,000 LOUISIANA LEGENDS TURF AT HARRAH’S LOUISIANA DOWNS
July 17, 2017
Farmerville Captured the $50,000 Louisiana Legends Starter Stakes
Bossier City, LA – Today’s card at Louisiana Downs featured the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Turf and the $50,000 Louisiana Legends Starter Turf. The two races were originally scheduled at Evangeline Downs, but transferred earlier this month when the Louisiana Racing Commission granted approval.
Rail Skimming Victory for Trust Factor in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Turf
Trust Factor, a 4-year-old colt owned by Scrivener Stables, captured his first career stakes with a ground saving trip in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Turf. The son of Paddy O Prado was bred in Louisiana and defeated five rivals in the mile and one-sixteenth turf stakes.
Jockey Colby Hernandez guided Trust Factor to victory, covering the first quarter mile in :23.48 and the half-mile in :47.22. He turned back a solid challenge from Eden Grey’s Kitten.prevailing as the even-money favorite in a final time of 1:41.56.
Trainer Mike Maker was enjoying the cooler weather in upstate New York preparing his runners for the upcoming Saratoga meet, but certainly enjoyed watching his charge win the first stakes of his career.
“He faced a very competitive field at Arlington and didn’t care for the soft turf,” said Maker. “I am glad that they were able to move the turf races to Louisiana Downs and give him a chance to run in statebred company. He liked the firm turf and Colby gave him a very good ride.”
Eden Grey’s Kitten ran a game second under Roberto Morales. Trained by Steve Flint, the 5-year-old son of Kitten’s Joy had won two in a row, including the $60,000 Costa Rising at Fair Grounds. Social Misfit, from the barn of Karl Broberg, closed for third, followed by Benwill, Well’s Gold and Impressive Student.
This was the fifth win from 10 starts for the gray colt, who earned $60,000 this afternoon, boosting his career bankroll to $184,060. Maker added that one mile might be the optimum distance for Trust Factor, but said that several options are on the table for his next start.
Farmerville Draws Off in the $50,000 Louisiana Legends Starter Stakes
End Zone Athletics’ Farmerville drew clear late to capture the $50,000 Louisiana Legends Starter Stakes.
Trained by Karl Broberg, the 6-year-old son of Richter Scale out of the Gift of Gib mare Very Gifted was making his 28th career start and picked up his sixth win.
Timothy Thornton was the winning pilot, breaking from the far outside post and angling his mount directly behind pacesetting Flit in Time. He covered the half-mile in 49.13 before taking command at the top of the stretch and drawing off to win by a margin of 1 ¾ lengths. The final time of the 7 ½ furlong race over a firm turf course was 1.30.77.
“I’ve ridden him several times and know he can be kind of aggressive early,” said Thornton. “Karl took the blinkers off and he ran comfortable fractions today and did it within his means. He’s a nice horse!”
Farmerville, sent off as the second betting choice, returned $6.20, $4.40 and $2.60 across the board. His winner’s share of $30,000 boosted his career earnings to $167,500. Flit in Time with Diego Saenz aboard, held for second with post-time favorite Southern Minister, ridden by Kerwin Clark was third. B Brazin ran fourth followed by Howe Amazing.
An inquiry was posted when the tightly bunched field of six entered the first turn and Valseunseated rider Alexander Castillo. The stewards review determined that Valse took a bad step, and no action was taken. Both horse and rider were not injured. Crooked As Can Be, One Survivor and Mitchnjohnny were early scratches.
Louisiana Cup Day News and Notes
The Louisiana Downs racing office is busy this week taking nominations for Louisiana Cup Day on Saturday, August 5. Nominations for the nine stakes will close this Saturday.
Trainer Ron Faucheux won the $100,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic last year with Sunbean, the intrepid turf specialist bred and owned by Brittlyn Stable, Inc. The same noted connections will return to Louisiana Downs with Safari Calamari, a 5-year-old mare by Half Ours.
“She ran second to Believe in Bertie (in the $60,000 Red Camelia Stakes) at Fair Grounds,” he said. “This mare is much better on the turf, but we needed to get a race in her. She ran at Louisiana Downs on July 12 over a sloppy track. She lost by a nose; but she ran well.”
Faucheux has two turf stakes in mind for Safari Calamari, the $50,000 Opelousas (one mile) or the $50,000 Louisiana Distaff (One mile and one-sixteenth). The mare has earned $178,780 with six wins from 15 starts.
“We have time to make the decision,” added Faucheux.

Louisiana Cup Day News and Notes
Evangeline Downs hosted Louisiana Legends Night on Saturday, July 8 with eight stakes races for Louisiana-breds.
It was a big night for trainer Edward J. Johnston and Pacific Pink, who won the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Distaff. The multiple stakes winning mare is owned by Keith Plaisance, and has won nine of her 21 career starts. She ran second here in the 2015 Louisiana Distaff and returned six weeks later to win the Elge Raspberry Stakes. The 5-year-old daughter of Private Vow out of the Robyn Dancer mare, Truly Romantic, is closing in on the half-million mark in career earnings. A return to Louisiana Downs in the $50,000 Louisiana Distaff is on the radar for the talented mare.
“She’s run three races very hard this year, and we are very proud of her,” said Johnston. “Her win at Evangeline on Saturday was pretty impressive in that she broke outward and was out of it for the first half-mile. Colby (Hernandez) knew what he had to do and got the job done.”
Johnston has nominated Pacific Pink and three other Louisiana-breds for stakes on Louisiana Cup Day, Saturday, August 5.
“I nominated Pacific Pink, Sunny Oak and Calamity Jane on Monday morning,” said Johnston. “We’ve got some time to choose between the Distaff or Sprint for the fillies and Grande Basin will be pointed to the Louisiana Cup Sprint or maybe the Turf Classic.”
Nominations for the Louisiana Cup will close July 22. With the addition of the two turf stakes, the August 5 racing program will feature the following:
Saturday, August 5 Louisiana Cup Day Noms close July 22
$50,000 Louisiana Cup Juvenile 2 YO LA-Bred Six furlongs

SIR GENGHIS WIRES THE FIELD IN THE $100,000 LOUISIANA LEGENDS CLASSIC

TRAINER KIRK HARRIS WINS TWO STAKES RACES ON THE LOUISIANA LEGENDS NIGHT PROGRAM
OPELOUSAS, LA – The connections of Sir Genghis had to choose between running in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Sprint and the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Classic tonight at Evangeline Downs. Part-owner and trainer Kirk Harris certainly made the right call as the gelding went right to the lead in the Classic and then withstood a stout challenge from Social Misfit in the final strides to win. The final time for the 1-1/16 miles over the fast main track was 1:43.93, just off the track record for the distance of 1:43.26, set by Friend Of Indy in 2013.
The winner broke well in the field of seven in the Classic and took the lead under jockey Kerwin Clark before the field made the first turn. He received some pressure from longshot Just Stormin through the early fractions of 24.08 seconds for the quarter-mile and 48.01 seconds for the half-mile. Social Misfit made a strong move in the stretch and closed to within a head of Sir Genghis, but just could not get by and had to settle for second. The 5-2 favorite, Classy Bird, was never a factor and finished sixth.
Sir Genghis was bred in Louisiana by Randel Stutes. He is owned by Gillian and Kirk Harris, who is also the trainer. The 6-year-old gelding is by Tale Of The Cat and out of the Unbridled’s Song mare, Staria. The win was the ninth in Sir Genghis’ 36-race career and the $60,000 first-place purse increases his lifetime earnings to $370,212.
Sir Genghis was sent off at 5-1 by the betting public and returned $13.60 to win, $7.00 to place and $4.60 to show. Social Misfit paid $5.60 to place and $4.60 to show, while Just Stormin held third and paid $7.60 to show.
Kirk Harris was also the part-owner and trainer of another winner on Louisiana Legends Night. P Boo rallied from off the pace to run down the favored Efforting in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Soiree, winning in a final time of 1:38.45 for the one mile distance. P Boo is owned by Robert Lestz, Gillian and Kirk Harris and was ridden to victory by Ashley Broussard. The 3-year-old filly was bred in Louisiana by Spendthrift Farm, LLC and is by Dominus and is out of the Freud mare, Paraiba.
The biggest favorite of the night was able to justify the faith of the bettors, as 1-9 choice Pacific Pink won the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Distaff. She was last early on but was able to run in the clear outside of traffic and eventually pulled away to win by three lengths in a final time of 1:44.80 for the 1-1/16 mile distance. The win was the second stakes victory of the Evangeline Downs meet for Pacific Pink, who had previously won the Spotted Horse Stakes on June 2. Pacific Pink was bred in Louisiana by Brandon Adcock. She is by Private Vow and out of the Robyn Dancer mare, Truly Romantic. Pacific Pink is owned by Keith Plaisance, trained by Edward Johnston and was ridden to victory by Colby Hernandez.
Hernandez was also the winning rider in the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Mademoiselle aboard Look Into My Eyes. She settled in nicely early on behind early leaders Rach’slastscarf and Overthegardengate and surged by in the stretch to win by three lengths in a final time of 1:03.04 for the 5-1/2 furlongs. Look Into My Eyes was bred in Louisiana by Robert McDowell and Bethe Deal. She is owned by Kathleen Amaya and Raffaele Centofanti and trained by Efren Loza, Jr. Look Into My Eyes is by City Zip and out of the Wild Again mare, Burnished Miss.
Jockey Diego Saenz scored four riding wins on the Louisiana Legends program. The one stakes victory for Saenz was aboard Underpressure in the $100,000 Cheval. Underpressure ran in midpack early on behind the pacesetting Bending Saint and Set Hut. Saenz sent the colt into the breach on the far turn and as the field entered the stretch Underpressure was in front and held off a late challenge from Magic Vow to win by 1-3/4 lengths in a final time of 1:37.77 for the one mile. Underpressure was bred in Louisiana by James McIngvale. He is owned by Mallory Greiner and trained by Chris Richard. Underpressure is by Birdstone and out of the Charismatic mare, Charming Colleen.
Jockamo’s Song had been running on the turf for his last five starts, but switched to the dirt to win the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Sprint. He got away to a decent start in the full field of 12, running seventh after a quarter-mile, before jockey Gerard Melancon moved him up nicely alongside the early leader, Icy Gentleman. Jockamo’s Song was able to pass that one and prevail by a length in a final time of 1:03.64 for the 5-1/2 furlongs. Jockamo’s Song was bred in Louisiana by Debbie and David Allen. He is owned by Dare to Dream Stable, LLC and trained by Michael Stidham. Jockamo’s Song is by Half Ours and out of the Trophy Hunter mare, Miss Clairnette.
Live racing will resume at Evangeline Downs on Wednesday night with a nine-race program. There will be a Super Hi 5 carryover of $1,766.72 into the Wednesday card. Post time will be 5:25 pm Central Time.
