TRAINER HENRY B. JOHNSON, JR. CLINCHES HIS 1,OOOTH WIN ON FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3 WITH A VICTORY BY CITY GHOST AT DELTA DOWNS

Bossier City Resident Reached Milestone in a Career Which Spans Four Decades

Vinton, LA –  Never one for the limelight, trainer Henry B. Johnson quietly reached a career milestone on Friday, November 3 at Delta Downs when City Ghost rallied for the win under jockey Angel Suarez in the seventh race. It was victory number 1,000 for the 82-year-old conditioner who has been training Thoroughbreds since 1983.

“It’s nice to get it out of the way, because it was a long time getting it done,” said Johnson. “She’s a well-bred horse and has been developing nicely.”

Breeder and owner Russell Welch and his wife, Janis, were at Delta Downs for the win by their filly by Shaman Ghost out of the City Zip mare Zip Her Up. Welch, who also has horses in Kentucky with Larry Jones, has trusted Johnson with his Texas and Louisiana-breds for the past seven years.

“He was sort of humbled by it all,” noted Welch of the post-race presentation. “We are both rodeo cowboys and H.B. does an outstanding job breaking babies. He did tell me that evening that reaching the milestone would never have been possible without the support of his owners.”

Johnson concurred with Welch, citing Dennis Milligan, Jerry Myers, Greg Hoffman, Jerry Chiles, David and Susan Bunn as well as Paul and Marianne Phillips as a few of his longtime  owners.

“I have been fortunate to have great owners who understand the importance of patience,” acknowledged Johnson.

Greg Hoffman (Hoffman Family Racing, LLC) shared his history with the Louisiana horseman.

“I had horses in training with Chris Candies and when he decided to get out of the business, he introduced me to H.B.,” said Hoffman. “He has always put his horses first; will back off if needed and has a wonderful team with him at the Hurricane Bluff Training Center.”

Earlier this year, Johnson and Hoffman teamed up with Meant for Me, who won a turf sprint on March 31 at Sam Houston Race Park giving veteran jockey Stewart Eliott his 5,500th career milestone.

Prior to his training career, Johnson was a rodeo competitor specializing in-bull and steer riding. One of his closest friends on the rodeo circuit was Hall of fame conditioner Carl Nafzger, who won the 1990 Kentucky Derby with Unbridled

“He was a tremendous bull rider,” said Johnson.

Early mentors for Johnson included Tater Whatley and Larry Lyle.

In a career that spans four decades with success at a number of Texas and Louisiana racetracks, Johnson has saddled 6,486 horses whose earnings surpassed $15 million. Top earners included Albert’s First ($477,318); Wa Bert($356,488); Political Whit ($347,190); Icy Gentleman (($320,795)  and Jimi’s a Star ($314,060).

No graded stakes winners for Johnson, but he has fond memories of many of his trainees, regardless of their number of wins or earnings.

“I’ve had some tricky horses,” said Johnson. “Wicked Rose was a bit of a surprise; loved to come from way out of it. Jimi’s Star retired sound and has become a hunter/jumper.”

Johnson and his wife, Jinnie, reside in Bossier City. They have three adult children: Hank, Josie and Kevin. Johnson has 18 horses at Delta Downs and ten in training at Hurricane Bluff. He credits his wife, who is a major part of his operation, assistant trainer Jose Gomez and Oscar Nunez, who hails as the “backbone” of the stable’s grooms.

Retirement is not on the immediate radar for Johnson, who will turn 83 in January.

“I like doing what I do and can’t think of anything else I would enjoy as much as this,” stated Johnson.

TOUCHUPONASTAR PREVAILS IN HARD FOUGHT DELTA MILE STAKES AT DELTA DOWNS

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted a pair of $100,000 stakes races on Friday night. The Delta Mile featured of field of nine 3-year-olds and up competing at eight furlongs and the Treasure Chest was a one-mile test for fillies and mares, also for 3-year-olds and up.

The Delta Mile showcased the talents of Set Hut LLC’s Touchuponastar, who was challenged early by Five Star General. The pair hooked up in a spirited speed dual while setting snappy fractional times of 22.88 seconds for the opening quarter mile, 46.33 for the half mile, and 1:11.17 for three quarters. As the field hit the top of the homestretch, Five Star General gave way as Touchuponastar began to open a lead inside the sixteenth pole, but it wasn’t over yet.

In the final strides Miles D, under leading jockey Vicente Del Cid, rallied stoutly and took aim at Touchuponastar and his pilot Tim Thornton. But it wasn’t to be as the rally came up ¾ of a length short under the wire. Five Star General held onto third, another ¾ of a length behind the runner-up. The final time for the Delta Mile was 1:38.19, which was accomplished over a fast racetrack.

The win by Touchuponastar, who is conditioned by Jeff Delhomme, was his second of the season as he also scored a win in the $100,000 Gold Cup on opening weekend. Overall, the bay runner has won nine of 12 career starts and has earned $528,100 after taking home the $60,000 first place prize on Friday night. Most of his bankroll has been earned while facing Louisiana-bred horses but the Delta Mile was an open-bred stakes event.

Bred in Louisiana by Coteau Grove Farms, Touchuponastar is a 4-year-old gelding by Star Guitar, out of the Lion Heart mare Touch Magic. He was purchased at sale for just $15,000 as a yearling in Texas.

The Treasure Chest field was narrowed to five horses after the scratching of Fannie and Freddie. At the break Yuki went to the front and challenged Adaline Julia for the pace setting duties as the pair traveled the opening quarter mile in 23.72 seconds. As they approached the half-mile mark of the race Yuki began to back up and would eventually finish a distant last.

Meanwhile, Adaline Julia recorded a half-mile split time of 48.09 before she was joined on the lead by Tiz a Macho Girl. That pair ran together through ¾ of a mile in 1:12.54 before hitting the top of the homestretch. In the lane Adaline Julia was put to the test but prevailed over Tiz a Macho Girl in a time of 1:39.36. Tiz a Macho Girl hit the finish line a neck behind the winner while Clay’s Moon Stone was another 3-1/2 lengths back in third.

The win was the fifth of Adaline Julia’s nine-race career and her second in stakes company. She earned $60,000 for the effort and now has a bankroll of $360,135.

Adaline Julia is a 4-year-old bay filly by Oxbow, out of the Orientate mare Daedal. She was bred in Kentucky by Ikhana Farm.

STRONG PROMISE TAKES THE LOUISIANA LEGACY AFTER DISQUALIFICATION AT DELTA DOWNS

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs kicked off an exciting weekend of racing on Friday night with a nine-race program that featured a pair of $100,000 Louisiana-bred stakes races. Fans were treated to the Louisiana Legacy and the Louisiana Jewel with the latter featuring 2-year-old fillies. Each race was contested over a fast track and at seven furlongs.

The Legacy featured plenty of drama as 10-1 longshot Good and Stout hit the finish line in front of heavily favored and undefeated Strong Promise before he was taken down by the stewards for interference. The disqualification came after Good and Stout made contact with Strong Promise with three eighths of a mile to the finish.

Following a clean break in the Legacy, Stovall and Good and Stout shared early pace-setting duties, traveling the first quarter mile in 23.31 seconds. Nearing the half mile mark, it was Good and Stout under C. J. McMahon who owned a narrow lead while stopping the timer in 48.35. Soon after that, the pacesetter came down toward the rail, bumping Strong Promise and jockey Casey Fuselier, who then traded bumps with Stovall. For that action the stewards disqualified Good and Stout and placed him last behind Stovall, who was taken back and finished last under the wire.

The official order of finish after the disqualification put Strong Promise first by ½ length over El Dinero second. Rising Koto Star wound up another five lengths behind in third. The final time of the Legacy was 1:27.33 seconds.

The win kept Strong Promise’s record perfect at four wins in as many starts for owner Whispering Oak Farm LLC and trainer Carrol Castille. The $60,000 first place paycheck raised his overall bankroll to $215,400 and he has now won three stakes races in all.

Bred in Louisiana by J. Adcock & Hume Wornall, Strong Promise is a 2-year-old gray or roan colt by Broken Vow, out of the Macho Uno mare St. Jean. He was purchased for $125,000 by his connections earlier this year.

When the gate opened Del Cid placed his mount three paths off the rail and right behind Good N Sassy and race favorite Diamond Deal, who proceeded to volley for the lead why covered the opening quarter mile in 23.45 seconds and the half mile in 48.69. As the frontrunners turned for home the pace began to take its toll as Emily’s Bullet then made her move to the lead in the upper stretch.

At the finish line Emily’s Bullet was drawing clear and won by a comfortable 4-¾ lengths, while Diamond Deal held second over a late closing Tommie G, who wound up a length behind the runner-up. The final time for the race was 1:27.78 on the fast track.

Trainer Greg Tracy and his brother and assistant, James “Jim” Tracy, have been issued six-month suspensions after a routine search by Louisiana State Police at Delta Downs turned up the following in their tack room: 59 bottles of injectable medications, 352 hypodermic needles, 256 syringes, and 75 packs of Albuterol Sulfate inhalation solution. Nine syringes with clear liquid were sent to Louisiana State University for testing.

The search, conducted on Feb. 4, 2023, led to a hearing conducted with three stewards on March 1, according to rulings posted on the Association of Racing Commissioners International website. DEL CID, BROBERG AND END ZONE ATHLETICS TAKE LEADING HORSEMEN TITLES FOR 2022-23 THOROUGHBRED SEASON AT DELTA DOWNS

TOP HONORS WERE HANDED OUT DURING FINAL PROGRAM, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28

VINTON, LA. –  The 2022-23 Thoroughbred season at Delta Downs wrapped up on Tuesday with a couple of familiar names and one new one at the top of the horsemen’s standings. Karl Broberg and End Zone Athletics, Inc. once again led all trainers and owners respectively while emerging superstar Vicente Del Cid topped the jockey standings for the first time in Vinton.

Coady photography

Del Cid came into the season at Delta Downs as an apprentice rider and left as a journeyman. He lost his apprentice allowance midway through the meeting, but the added weight did not slow him down as he topped the standings from start to finish and ended the season with 121 wins and $2,789,565 in mount earnings to lead both categories. He also scored three stakes wins this year, each worth $100,000 in total purse money.

Del Cid’s accomplishment at Delta Downs followed a breakout season at Boyd Gaming’s other Louisiana racetrack, Evangeline Downs. During the 2022 meet in Opelousas, Del Cid won his first riding title by notching 125 wins. His riding prowess in 2022 garnered enough votes nationally to see him finish second in the voting for the Eclipse Award for Champion Apprentice Jockey, which was announced in late January.

Following Del Cid in the jockey standings were C. J. McMahon (85 wins), Jose Guerrero (59), Joe Stokes (52), Alex Birzer (49), Joel Dominguez (40), Tim Thornton (40), Thomas Pompell (39), Elio Berrera (33), and Juan Vargas (33).

Coady photography

Broberg continued his dominance at Delta Downs in 2022-23 by sending out 72 winners and totaling $1,473,510 in barn earnings to lead each category. It was the 12th straight time the Broberg barn has led the standings dating back to the 2011-12 season. During the 2018-19 season his horses set the current records for Thoroughbred trainers with 107 wins and earnings of $2,017,120.

Rounding out the list of leading trainers for the Delta Downs meeting were Brett Brinkman (39), Juan Larrosa (38), Isai V. Gonzalez (32), Allen Landry (26), Eduardo Ramirez (26), Greg Tracy (21), Edith Mojica (16), Sam Breaux (16), and Lee M. Thomas (16).

End Zone Athletics, Inc. saw 59 of their runners win and earn a total of $1,158,650 during the meeting to lead both categories for owners. It was the eighth consecutive title and 11th overall for End Zone Athletics, which includes partners Karl Broberg and Matt Johanson.
