LATE SEPTEMBER WINS THE $100,000 LOUISIANA LEGACY IN MID OCTOBER AT DELTA DOWNS

2-YEAR-OLD COLT SURVIVES JOCKEY OBJECTION TO SCORE FIRST STAKES WIN

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted the $100,000 Louisiana Legacy Stakes on Saturday night as the track closed out another race week in Vinton, Louisiana. The race was won by Kevin Stedman’s Late September under jockey Jose Rodriguez. The Jose Camejo trainee and his connections had to wait a while to celebrate in the winner’s circle after the race as a jockey’s objection was lodged against him by C. J. McMahon, the rider King’s Lute, who finished second. After several tense moments the claim of foul was disallowed and the win was made official.

Late September was making his first start in four months in the Legacy and was facing state-bred company for the first time. The layoff didn’t bother him as he broke sharply and settled back into fifth position early in the seven-furlong test around two turns. Meanwhile the pace was being set by Bisping who traveled the opening quarter mile in 22.73 seconds and stopped the timer in 47.24 for the half mile. The pacesetter, and wagering co-favorite along with Late September, was challenged by the eventual winner as the field entered the second turn but could not repel the challenge. Bisping would go on to finish fifth in the field of nine.

When Late September entered the final furlong he was put to the test by King’s Lute, who had rallied stoutly from the back on the pack. The pair came together in the upper-stretch before Late September pulled clear to finish a length to the good of his rival at the finish line. Boss Soss would up third, another 5-3/4 length behind the runner-up. Late September finished the race in a time of 1:28.13 over a fast track.

The win by Late September was the second of his four-race career. He earned $60,000 for the effort and now has a bankroll of $97,870.

Bred in Louisiana by Coteau Grove Farms, LLC, Late September is a 2-year-old bay colt by Munnings, out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Hello Maggie May. He was purchased at sale earlier this year for $60,000.

The wagering public who backed Late September at the windows was rewarded with payoffs of $6 to win, $4.20 to place and $3 to show. King’s Lute paid $9 to place and $5.80 to show. The Boss Soss was worth $3 to show.

JANET IS READY UP TO THE TASK IN THE $100,000 LOUISIANA JEWEL AT DELTA DOWNS

LOUISIANA-BRED FILLY WINS THE THIRD STAKES RACE OF HER CAREER

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted the 14th running of the $100,000 Louisiana Jewel Stakes on Friday night and talented filly Janet Is Ready came through with the win. Owned by Carl J. Deville, Gerald Bruno, Jr., Our Blue Streak Stable LLC and Jerry Caroom, the Chasey Deville Pomier trainee was guided to victory by apprentice jockey Vicente Del Cid.

The Jewel, which featured eight 2-year-old Louisiana-bred fillies competing at seven furlongs, had an honest early pace set by Cajun Gumbow, who went the opening quarter mile in a time of 23.28 seconds and the half mile in 47.88. When the field entered the second turn of the race, Janet Is Ready was roused to the lead by Del Cid but the stretch run would not be easy as she had to deal with a fast-closing Tensas Candy.

Through the stretch Janet Is Ready dug in gamely and held off her game rival Tensas Candy to win by ¾ of a length. Free Drop Maddy was no threat to the top pair and finished another two lengths behind in third. The final time of the race was 1:28.04 and it was contested over a fast track.

The win by Janet Is Ready marked the fourth of her six-race career. The score also gave her three wins in stakes company from four starts. Her maiden-breaking victory came at Evangeline Downs in June. Saturday night’s triumph earned Janet Is Ready a tidy sum of $60,000 and raised her fledgling bankroll to $191,900.

Bred in the Bayou State by Bentley T. Early, Janet Is Ready is a bay offspring of Custom for Carlos, out of the Pure Prize mare Just Call Me Janet. She was purchased as a yearling for just $5,500.

Sent to the gate at odds of just over 2-1, Janet Is Ready returned $6.40 to win, $4.20 to place and $3 to show. Tensas Candy was worth $16.80 to place and $7 to show. Free Drop Maddy paid $2.60 to show.

WHO TOOK THE MONEY CASHES IN WINNING THE $100,000 GOLD CUP AT DELTA DOWNS

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs closed out its first week of live Thoroughbred racing for the 2022-23 season on Saturday and the nine-race program featured the $100,000 Gold Cup Stakes for 3-year-old and up Louisiana-bred competing at seven furlongs. The event was won by Allied Racing Stables, LLC’s Who Took the Money under jockey Deshawn Parker.

Using a come-from-behind style in a race with plenty of pace, Who Took the Money rallied strongly around the second turn to garner the lead in the upper-stretch and go on to a 7-1/4 length win at the finish line. The early pace of 22.80 second for the quarter mile and 46.94 for the half was set by Brians Iron Mike. But as the field turned for home it was Who Took the Money who found the lead and went on to the score. Brians Iron Mike stayed on for second while Relentless Dancer settled for third another fourt lengths behind the runner-up.

The final time for Who Took the Money in the Gold Cup was 1:24.51 seconds, just 20/100ths off the track record set by No Its not in 2003. Each race on the Saturday card was contested over a fast track.

Who Took the Money was making his local debut in the Gold Cup and was also coming off a five-month layoff. His last start before the race came in the Evangeline Downs Classic back in May, which he also won. The Gold Cup tally was his eighth from 12 overall starts and his fourth in stakes company. He earned $60,000 for his effort on Saturday and now boasts a lifetime bankroll of $347,677.

Bred in Louisiana by his owner, Who Took the Money is a 4-year-old chestnut gelding by Steet Boss, out of the Speightstown mare Speights’ Colony.

Sent to the gate at odds of 8-5, Who Took the Money paid $5.40 to win, $4.20 to place and $2.80 to show. Brian’s Iron Mike was worth $8.40 to place and $6.20 to show. Relentless Dancer returned $5.60 to show.

Delta Downs will race again next Wednesday through Saturday nights. First post time each evening is at 4:55 pm.

FREE LIKE A GIRL STAYS PERFECT AT DELTA DOWNS IN THE $100,000 MAGNOLIA STAKES

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted the first stakes race of its 2022-23 Thoroughbred season on Friday night and the fans in attendance were treated to a stellar performance by Free Like a Girl, who kept her local record perfect at four-for-four with a victory in the featured $100,000 Magnolia Stakes. The 3-year-old filly was ridden to victory by Pedro Cotto, Jr.

Coming into the race off two consecutive runner-up efforts in graded stakes company, Free Like a Girl stalked the early pace in the seven-furlong test for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares set by Winning Romance, who went the opening quarter mile in 23.37 seconds. At the half-mile point Noneya took a short lead stopping the clock in 47.68, but the advantage was short lived as Free Like a Girl swept to the front while three wide.

In the homestretch Cotto gave the Chasey Pomier trainee the gentlest of reminders as she held Winning Romance at bay to win the Magnolia by 1-1/2 lengths. Snowball finished third, another six lengths behind the top pair. The final running time for the winner was 1:25.92. Each race on the program was contested over a fast track.

Free Like a Girl, who is owned by Gerald Bruno, Jr., Carl Deville, Chasey Deville Pomier and Jerry Caroom, has now won nine-of-18 career starts overall and she earned $60,000 for her Magnolia score on Friday. Her total bankroll now stands at $662,128.

Bred in Louisiana by Kim Renee Stover & Lisa Osborne, Free Like a Girl is a bay filly by El Deal, out of the Flashy Bull mare Flashy Prize.

Sent to the gate as the overwhelming favorite of the fans at odds of 1-9, Free Like a Girl paid $2.20 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Winning Romance returned $3.40 to place and $2.40 to show. Snowball was worth $3 to show.

Delta Downs will close out the opening week action on Saturday with another nine-race program headed by the $100,000 Gold Cup stakes for Louisiana-breds. The card kicks off at 4:55 pm.

DELTA DOWNS SET TO BEGIN 2022-23 THOROUGHBRED SEASON WEDNESDAY NIGHT

 EXCITING NEW PROMOTIONS SET TO BEGIN ON OPENING WEEK 

 

 

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel will kick off its 2022-23 Thoroughbred season on Wednesday night, October 5. Live racing will begin at 4:55 pm each Wednesday through Saturday evening with a few exceptions during the holidays until the season comes to a close on February 25.

During the season, Delta Downs will offer a stakes schedule that features 22 races and a total of $1.985 million in total purse money. The track will also roll out exciting weekly promotions in the OTB for fans to participate in throughout the 21-week season.

The stakes activity kicks off on opening weekend with the $100,000 Magnolia on Friday, October 7 and the $100,000 Gold Cup on Saturday, October 8. Both races are restricted to Louisiana-bred horses with the Magnolia featuring 3-year-old and up fillies and mares.

The richest program of the year will happen on Saturday, February 4 when the track hosts another edition of Louisiana Premier Night. The exciting card will feature some of the best Louisiana-breds competing in 10 stakes races worth total purse money of $895,000. The headliner on Louisiana Premier Night is the $150,000 Louisiana Premier Night Championship for 4-year-olds and up competing at 1-1/16 miles.

The leading horsemen from last year at Delta Downs are expected to vie for top honors once again this season.

Jockey Tim Thornton, trainer Karl Broberg and owner End Zone Athletics Inc. should vie for the top spots in their respective categories again this meeting. Thornton is attempting to win his fifth consecutive title; Broberg is going for this 12th straight trainer crown; and End Zone Athletics will try to win its 11th title in the last 12 years.

Opening week will offer race fans several opportunities to save money and win cash. On opening night, Wednesday patrons in the OTB can score a free program between 3 and 7 pm; On Thursday night fans can purchase a hot dog for just $1 between 4 and 7 pm; On Friday night fans can score a half-priced drink at the OTB bar between 5 – 7 pm; and on Saturday the first 500 fans will receive a free t-shirt and will be entered into a drawing for $1,000 cash. Each promotion requires the participant to be 21 years of age or older and a Boyd Rewards Card member.

The Delta Downs Infield Is Marty’s World

If you’re a horse racing type with a Facebook account, you’ve probably seen the video.

An alligator is seen ambling across the dirt path that goes through the infield at Delta Downs in Vinton, La. A nearby horse is understandably unsure what to make of the reptile, ultimately deciding to spin around as the handler tries to maintain control and get the horse to the paddock for an upcoming race.

The caption for the video, posted on Facebook by Joe Allen, an assistant trainer for Richard Lane, reads, “It’s Marty’s world. We just live in it.”

Clear Skies; Louisiana Premier Stakes

The 19th running of Louisiana Premier Day at Delta Downs on Feb. 5 couldn’t have been scripted out any better. With clear skies and a cool breeze, the 11-race program featured 10 stakes races and more than $900,000 in total purse money for Louisiana-bred horses who were vying for hoof-pounding greatness. Not only was the weather picture perfect, but the betting handle soared to $3,075,587, which was nearly $800,000 more than last year’s soirée.

TOP HONORS WERE HANDED OUT DURING CLOSING DAY PROGRAM ON SATURDAY, MARCH 5 

 

 

VINTON, LA. –  The 2021-22 Thoroughbred season at Delta Downs wrapped up on Saturday with familiar names topping the horsemen standings. Tim Thornton won his fourth straight leading rider title while Karl Broberg notched his 11th consecutive crown in the training ranks. Broberg and Matt Johansen’s End Zone Athletics, Inc. earned their seventh leading owner title and their 10th in the last 11 years.

 

Thornton’s season included 129 wins and mount earnings of $2,782,260. The title was Thornton’s fourth consecutive since moving his tack to Vinton in late 2017. During his first full season in 2018-19, Thornton set a new track record for mount earnings in a single season with $2,894,080.

Thornton, a husband and father of three, won six of the track’s 26 stakes races during the meet. His biggest score came with the Allen Landy-trained Net a Bear, who took the $125,000 Louisiana Premier Day Distaff on the track’s richest race day of the year, February 5.

 

Following Thornton in the jockey standings were Joel Dominguez (65 wins), Joe Stokes (61), Jose Guerrero (50), Alex Birzer (46), Thomas Pompell (45), Vicente Del-Cid (42), C. J. McMahon (33), Kevin Roman (29), and Gerard Melancon (28).

 

Broberg continued his dominance at Delta Downs in 2021-22 by sending out 105 winners and totaling $1,928,820 in barn earnings. Broberg nearly bettered his own records for Thoroughbred conditioners this meet as well. During the 2018-19 season his horses set the current standard with 107 wins and earnings of $2,017,120.

 

Rounding out the list of leading trainers for the Delta Downs meeting were Allen Landry (31), Eduardo Ramirez (31), Brett Brinkman (26), Dale White, Sr. (21), Sam Breaux (20), Scott Gelner (19), Benjamin Zeno (19), Greg Tracy (19), and Lee M. Thomas (19).

 

End Zone Athletics, Inc. saw 78 of their runners win and earn a total of $1,322,480. The accomplishment broke their own records set just last year when End Zone won 64 races and took home $1,186,210.

 

Rounding out the top owners for the season were Dale White, Sr. (18), Elite Thoroughbred Racing, LLC (Michele Rodriguez) (12), Israel Flores Horses LLC (10), Keith Charles (9), Adriel Gonzalez (8), Gerald L. Averett, Jr. (7), Norman Stables, LLC (7), Rylee Grudzien (7), and Sandy Badeaux (6).

 

Delta Downs now looks forward to its upcoming American Quarter Horse season which gets underway on April 29 and runs through July 16. The 46-day meeting will feature live racing each Wednesday through Saturday night with first post time set for 6:15 pm Central Time.

VODKA GIMLET WINS SECOND STAKES RACE OF THE SEASON IN THE BIG DRAMA AT DELTA DOWNS

VINTON, LA. – Delta Downs hosted the $75,000 Big Drama Stakes for 3-year-olds on Saturday afternoon and it was Ellen Epstein’s Vodka Gimlet who got the win under jockey Thomas Pompell. It was the second straight stakes victory for the Allen Landry trainee as he also won the $100,000 Louisiana Premier Day Prince at Delta Downs just 21 days earlier.

 

In the early stages of the Big Drama it was a speed duel between Brian’s Iron Mike and Feisty Fist, who clicked off early fractions of 23.57 seconds for the quarter mile and 47.47 for the half. The pair began to feel pressure from the closers as they entered the second turn of the seven-furlong affair as Totalizer came to the attack three wide wile Vodka Gimlet was bottled up behind rivals.

 

As the field entered the top of the homestretch after traveling three-quarters in 1:14.61, Vodka Gimlet angled out from behind horses and took aim at Lightning Struck and Totalizer who were dueling inside the sixteenth pole. In the final strides Vodka Gimlet was able to overhaul his rivals and record the win by a neck over Lightning Struck while Totalizer settled for third, another ¾ of a length behind the top pair.

 

Vodka Gimlet stopped the clock in 1:28.59 over a track what was listed as fast all day.

 

Vodka Gimlet has now won three races lifetime from seven overall starts. His $45,000 paycheck on Saturday upped his career bankroll to $147,645.

 

Bred in Louisiana by 5 B Farm, Inc, Vodka Gimlet is a 3-year-old bay gelding by Goldencents, out of the Out of Place mare Shy Baby.

 

Sent to the gate at odds of 8-5, Vodka Gimlet paid $5.40 to win, $3.20 to place and $2.20 to show. Lightning Struck returned $10.80 to place and $5.20 to show. Totalizer was worth $3.40 to show.

 

Delta Downs will conclude its 2021-22 Thoroughbred season next Wednesday through Saturday. Post time each day is scheduled for 12:55 pm.
