The Texas Thoroughbred Association will add a mixed session to its summer yearling sale scheduled Aug. 29 at Lone Star Park.
It will be the second auction held by the TTA, which in April offered its 2-year-olds in training sale at Lone Star. Fasig-Tipton formerly managed the Texas sales in partnership with the TTA and Lone Star.
“We’ve already seen strong interest from around the region since we announced the yearling sale, and the addition of a mixed session should only increase participation from both buyers and consignors,” TTA executive director Mary Ruyle said in a release. “We are thrilled to be working with Lone Star Park on this venture and to have Tim Boyce directing our sales.
“With a central location in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and a top-notch sales pavilion at Lone Star Park, we expect our sales to remain a leader in the Southwest.”
The average for the April 2-year-olds in training sale was up 5% compared with the last auction held by Fasig-Tipton, while the buy-back rate dropped to just under 20% from 33%, officials said.
The entry deadline for the yearling and mixed sessions is June 6. The TTA has mailed consignment forms, and they are also available on a new website (www.ttasales.com) dedicated to the organization’s auctions.
Louisiana breds have once again shown they can bring value at every level of the thoroughbred industry. Two Accredited Louisiana-Bred two year olds brought $175,000 and $240,000 at the 2016 Fasig Tipton MidAtlantic Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale. The two day sale at Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland concluded May 24th.
Hip 249, a colt by Into Mischief-Star of Glory (Unbridled) was purchased by EQB, Inc. for Zayat Stables $175,000. A half brother to stakes placed winner Let Me In consigned by Pike Racing, agent, was bred by Orange Grove Thoroughbreds. Pike Racing also sold the $1million sale topper.
Hip 581, a chestnut filly by Creative Cause-Henry’s Posse (Posse), consigned by Paul Sharp agent was purchased by PTK, LLC for $240,000. The first foal out of stakes placed winner, Henry’s Posse from the first crop of G1 Norfolk Stakes winner millionaire, Creative Cause was bred by David Meche and Perry Judice.
A total of ten accredited Louisiana breds sold through the ring for a total of $653,000. Their average of $65,300 was close to the overall sale average of $68,654.
Equine Sales Company’s 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale, held May 10, recorded impressive increases with double-digit gains in gross, average and median. From 92 head offered, 60 sold for gross receipts of $918,300 with an average of $14,811 and median of $11,000. The gross jumped 27.4 percent from last year’s $720,700 on 54 of 75 sold. This year’s average increased 11 percent from $13,346, and the median soared 60.6 percent from $6,850. Buybacks came in at 32.6 percent, up from 28 percent last year.
“We couldn’t be more pleased with the results of this sale,” Sales Director Foster Bridewell said. “This was our third juvenile auction, and I think it has really established a foothold in the region in that short time. It really helped having the Equine Sales Derby and Equine Sales Oaks last week at Evangeline Downs to showcase the quality of horses to come out of this auction.”
The new races for sale graduates were held for the first time this year, and horses that went through the ring in this auction will be eligible for the 2017 runnings of those $75,000 stakes.
This year’s sale topper at $57,000 was a Louisiana-bred colt by Grade 1 winner and leading Louisiana stallion D’wildcat named D’digger. The chestnut is out of the Grade 2-winning Mining mare Desert Digger, who has produced five winners including stakes winner Sirmione. D’digger worked :11 flat in the May 8 under tack show and sold to Rodney Verret from the consignment of Twin Oaks Training Center LLC, agent.
The high-selling filly is from the first crop of four-time Louisiana Horse of the Year and all-time leading Louisiana-bred earner Star Guitar. Named Shamrock Star and consigned by Benchmark Training Center Inc., agent, the Louisiana-bred sold for $45,000 to Carl Moore Management LLC after working a furlong in a co-fastest :10 1/5.
Next up on the sale calendar for Equine Sales is the Consignor Select Yearling Sale on September 7.
Equine Sales Co. of Louisiana’s 2-year-olds in training and horses of racing age sale in Opelousas, La. begins at 11 a.m. CDT, today, May 10, and will be streamed live on the sale company’s website. 101 head are cataloged.
“The catalog looked very strong on paper, and I think that was proven on the track with some excellent workouts,” said sales director Foster Bridewell.

OPELOUSAS, LA- Jerry Namy’s Couche Couche lived up to his heavy favoritism at 1-5 and won the $75,000 Equine Sales Derby on Saturday night at Evangeline Downs. The win is the second stakes score of the season for Couche Couche, a Karl Broberg trainee who had previously won the $50,000 Ragin Cajun Stakes on April 9.
Couche Couche was unhurried early on by jockey Colby Hernandez, who allowed him to settle at the rail and save ground while Drummer Boy and Ganges set fast fractions of 22.42 for the quarter-mile and 46.79 for the half-mile. Couche Couche began to advance as the field entered the far turn and made a three-wide rally to take the lead as the field entered the stretch. He drew away to win by 2-1/2 lengths in a final time of 1:44.37 for the 1 1/16 miles over the fast track.
Couche Couche paid $2.40 to win, $2.10 to place and $2.10 to show. Ganges came home second, paying $2.60 to place and $2.10 to show. Drummer Boy was third and returned $2.60 to show.
The win by Couche Couche is his third in five lifetime starts and he earned $45,000 for the victory, increasing his total lifetime earnings to $108,230. The 3-year-old gelding was bred in Louisiana by Charles Titsworth. He is by Pulling Punches and out of the Doc’s Leader mare, Sassy Belle.

A trio of Louisiana-bred fillies worked an eighth-mile in :10 1/5 on Sunday to tie for the fastest time during the under tack show for the Equine Sales Company 2-Year-Olds in Training and Horses of Racing Age Sale in Opelousas, Louisiana. Consigned by Pike Racing, agent, hip #28 is from the second crop of Custom for Carlos out of the winning Pollard’s Vision mare Stellar Vision, who is a half sister to Grade 3-placed runner Scarlet Starlet. Stellar Vision has one foal of racing age who has yet to race.
Hip #76, named Shamrock Star and consigned by Benchmark Training Center Inc., agent, is from the first crop of four-time Louisiana Horse of the Year Star Guitar out of the winning Eugene’s Third Son mare Indian Treaty, who also has one foal of racing age that has yet to race. Indian Treaty is a half sister to Texas champion and three-time stakes winner There Goes Rocket.
Hip #98, consigned by Boutte Sales, agent, is a daughter of Greeley’s Galaxy named Just Kylie. Her dam, Just Alex, is a winning daughter of Afternoon Deelites and a half sister to two stakes winners.
All graduates of the sale are eligible for the Equine Sales Derby and Equine Sales Oaks, which will be run next spring at Evangeline Downs for $75,000 apiece at 1 1/16 miles. The inaugural runnings of those races were held this past Friday and Saturday with Jerry Namy’s Couche Couche taking the Derby and Chance Yelverton’s Lil Allie Dancer winning the Oaks.

Equine Sales Company of Louisiana has announced the addition of current supplements to the 2016 Two Year Old In Training Sale with Horses of Racing Age.

Monday’s Texas 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, the first conducted by the Texas Thoroughbred Association and Lone Star Park without Fasig-Tipton as a partner, posted similar results to last year’s auction with an increase in average. Buybacks improved significantly from 33.3% last year to 19.7% this year.
Total sales for this auction came in at $981,300 with 53 of 66 head sold for an average of $18,515 and median of $12,000.
Last year’s sale, run by Fasig-Tipton, saw 66 head sell for $1,161,900 from 99 offered. The average for that sale was $17,605 with a median of $13,000.
Two horses at this year’s sale eclipsed the $75,000 top price from last year. The high seller was hip #40, a Texas-bred filly by Too Much Bling who worked the fastest time of :10 1/5 in Saturday’s under tack show. Consigned by Asmussen Horse Center, agent, the filly sold for $95,000 to Danny Keene. She is out of the Action this Day mare Soft Music, whose first two starters are both multiple winners.
The second-highest price was also a filly, as hip #24, a Kentucky-bred by Henny Hughes, went for $80,000 to Hebert Bloodstock, agent, from the consignment of Oak Haven Farm, agent. She is out of the stakes-winning Saratoga Six mare Playcaller, who has produced Grade 1 winner Diplomat Lady and Grade 2 winner Dream Play.
“Especially considering we got a bit of a late start in putting this sale together, we could not be more pleased with the results and the increase in average over last year,” said Mary Ruyle, executive director of the Texas Thoroughbred Association. “With a Texas-bred topping the sale and a very low buyback rate, I think that proves there is still strength in the industry here.”
The TTA also announced that it will hold a yearling auction in late August at Lone Star. Like the 2-year-old sale, the yearling sale will take the place of the auction formerly operated in partnership with Fasig-Tipton.
“The TTA is committed to advancing the Texas racing and breeding industry, and part of that commitment includes giving horsemen a venue to buy and sell horses in this state,” said Ruyle. “In advance of this decision, we found significant interest from Texas breeders with yearlings to consign, and with the central location and quality facility at Lone Star we also expect to attract quality consignments from around the region. We were lucky to have Tim Boyce on board to manage this sale for us, and he will do the same for the yearling sale.”
