Breeders’ Cup Classic has Louisiana Connections

Two Louisiana based sires have connections to this years historic Breeders Cup Classic. Yankee Gentleman and E Dubai are respectively the broodmare sires of American Pharoah and Effinex, the one and two finishers of the 2015 $5 million Classic.

Earlier this year, American Pharoah became the first horse in 37 years to sweep the Triple Crown races, decisively winning the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes, and is now the first ever to add the Breeders Cup Classic, which was first run in 1984, to his crown. American Pharoah concludes his racing career with a record of nine wins and one second from eleven starts and earnings of $8,650,300. His dam, Littleprincessemma, is a daughter of Louisiana based sire Yankee Gentleman (Storm Cat-Key Phrase). Yankee Gentleman is a perreniel leading Louisiana sire and is currently ranked 6th among 2015 Leading Sires in Louisiana. Yankee Gentleman stands at LeMesa Thorougbreds in Carencro, Louisiana.

Breeders Cup Classic second place runner was long-shot 33-1 Effinex, who earlier this year won the G2 Suburban H. and the G3 Excelsior S., and placed in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. His dam, What A Pear is a multiple stakes winning daughter of Louisiana based sire E Dubai (Mr. Prospector-Words of War). E Dubai is currently ranked 2ndamong 2015 Leading Louisiana Sires and 3rd among 2015 Louisiana Juvenile Sires. E Dubai stands at Elite Thoroughbreds in Folsom, Louisiana.

– THE DAUGHTER OF FORESTRY PULLS 12-1 UPSET UNDER HECTOR SANTIAGO –

VINTON, LA. Delta Downs hosted the 13th running of the $100,000 Magnolia Stakes on Friday night and it turned into quite a thriller as 12-1 longshot Forest Lake battled gamely through the stretch with race favorite Heatseeker Sharon and Lady Grantham before pulling away to win late.

Under jockey Hector Santiago, Forest Lake stalked the early leader Heatseeker Sharon through the first half of the one-mile test for Louisiana-bred fillies and mares. She then launched a three-wide bid into the homestretch where she was put to the test but responded by wearing down her two rivals, defeating Heatseeker Sharon by 1-1/4 lengths with Lady Grantham finishing another neck behind in third.

Forest Lake, who is trained by Jerry Delhomme and is owned by ex-NFL quarterback Jake Delhommes Set-Hut LLC, covered the eight furlongs over a fast track in 1:40.78.

The victory by Forest Lake was the third of her 13-race career. She earned $60,000 for the effort which brought her overall bankroll up to $208,670. She also sports five seconds and two thirds on her lifetime record.

Forest Lake is a 3-year-old filly by Forestry, out of the Kris S. mare Oval. She was bred in Louisiana by Jake Delhomme and Set-Hut, LLC.

Forest Lake rewarded her backers at the wagering windows to the tune of $26.80 to win, $9.40 to place and $6.80 to show. Heatseeker Sharon was worth $4 to place and $3.40 to show. Lady Grantham paid $5.80 to show.

Delta Downs will wrap up its third week of live racing on Saturday with another 11-race program that gets underway at 5:40 pm CT. Saturdays featured race is the $100,000 Gold Cup for older Louisiana-breds also competing at one mile.

All-Time Leading Texas Stallion Valid Expectations Dies at 22

Valid Expectations, a Florida-bred son of Valid Appeal who was leading freshman sire in North America by money won and winners and went on to become the all-time leading sire in Texas, has died at the age of 22, according to a report in AmericanRacehorse.com.

Bred by the late Harry T. Mangurian Jr., Valid Expectations (produced from the Iron Constitution mare Mepache) was campaigned by Ackerley Brothers Farm, which purchased Valid Expectations for $225,000 at the OBS February Sale of 2-year-olds in training. He was trained by Steve Asmussen.

Winner of 12-of-27 races, including two Grade 3 events, the Derby Trial Stakes and Sport Page Handicap, Valid Expectations stood his first two years in Florida, then moved to William S. Farishs Huisache Farm (later Lanes End Texas). He was owned by a partnership consisting of Lanes End, Leland and Robert Ackerley, Joe Archer, Greg Goodman, and Robert and Janice McNair.

After leading the Texas sire list nearly every year throughout his career, Valid Expectations was pensioned in 2013. His progeny earned in excess of $33.1 million and included Group 1 Golden Shaheen winner Saratoga County and Ivan Fallunovalot, a possible starter in this years G1 Breeders Cup Sprint

Nominations Close Saturday, Oct. 24 for the $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot

13TH RUNNING OF AMERICAS SECOND RICHEST RACE FOR 2-YEAR-OLDS

CARRIES $600,000 FIRST PLACE PRIZE ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21

VINTON, LA. Nominations to this years $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot close on Saturday, October 24. The race offers a $600,000 first place prize as well as qualifying points in the Road to the Kentucky Derby series.

There were 282 horses nominated to the $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot last year including Ocho Ocho Ocho, who won the race under Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith. This years race is once again expected to attract another high number of nominations from horsemen all around the country.

Delta Downs Racetrack Casino & Hotel will host the 13th running of the grade III race for 2-year-olds competing at 1-1/16 miles over a dirt surface on Saturday, November 21, along with seven other stakes races. The entire program will feature more than $2.3 million in total purse money. There will be a special first race post time on Jackpot Day of 1:15 pm CT.

The $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot has launched the careers for several top horses. The richest Jackpot alumni is 2012 winner Goldencents, who tallied over $3 million in career earnings including three grade I wins before his retirement last year. The 2008 Jackpot winner, Big Drama, went on to take the Breeders Cup Sprint in 2010 and earned over $2.7 million during his time on the racetrack.

The race has also been a proven path to the Kentucky Derby. Last years $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot produced three starters for this years showdown at Churchill Downs in May. There have been six Kentucky Derby starters come out of the Jackpot in the past three years and since its inception the race has seen 12 of its participants make it to the big dance in Louisville.

This year the Road to the Kentucky Derby series will include 35 stakes leading up to the big race at Churchill Downs on Saturday, May 7. The top four finishers in this years $1,000,000 Delta Downs Jackpot will be awarded points on a 10-4-2-1 scale toward a possible starting position in the first leg of the 2016 Triple Crown.
